Position Summary:

The Specialist, State Affairs will operate in a fast-paced work environment and is responsible for (1) drafting and reviewing department communications and state policy resources; (2) state legislative tracking support; (3) conducting policy research; (4) providing administrative support to department staff; (5) supporting coordination and execution of the annual State Dementia Services Coordinator Summit; (6) working on programs, projects, and briefings sponsored by the State Affairs department. This position will interact considerably with other members of the State Affairs team, staff in other departments within the policy office, and state government affairs staff in the field in all 50 states who are addressing key state policy issues including Medicaid, long-term care, training standards, aging, access to treatment, and other related issues.

This position reports to the Vice President of State Affairs and is based in the Association's Home office in Washington D.C.

Responsibilities

Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Drafts and conducts editorial review of State Affairs team products and communications including weekly newsletter content, department news updates, policy resources for field staff, website and intranet information, and annual summaries of state affairs activities.

  • Assists with state legislative tracking and supports the use of the tracking system by field staff.

  • Assists with the management of all major state policy data sources and databases and collecting related information from field staff.

  • Provides support for all on-site and virtual meetings, manages technical needs, prepares meeting materials, and assists with meeting follow-up activities.

  • Provides administrative support to the State Affairs team, schedules conference calls and drafts PowerPoint presentations for internal and external audiences.

  • Conducts policy research and supports the development of state policy materials as needed.

  • Leads support on the the coordination and execution of the State Dementia Services Coordinator Summit, an annual convening of state agency officials.

  • Other duties, programs, projects, and briefings sponsored by the State Affairs department, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of two years of professional experience in a government affairs setting, with strong written and oral communications skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communications and interpersonal skills are essential.

  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with effective time management and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong PowerPoint and other computer skills (Google Suite, MS Office, video conferencing, database).

  • Previous experience working in a government affairs office or within state or federal government.

  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for the job and to travel up to 5%.

Estimated salary range ($58,000 - $65,000)
