Save the Children's U.S. Programs and Advocacy (USPA) division partners with low-income, rural communities across the country to give children living in these underserved areas a healthy start, the best possible opportunity to learn, and protection from harm. USPA is seeking a full-time Community Engagement Specialist (CES) to support our Rural Education work. In this role, you will hold a relationship oriented, field-based position with a primary objective to develop, build, and support early-childhood focused community partnerships. You will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating the US Programs & Advocacy (USPA) early childhood and education focused community-engagement process, which includes conducting a comprehensive community assessment, developing a results-oriented programmatic blue print, and building community capacity through advocacy, targeted outreach, and training & development opportunities. You will work collaboratively with USPA national staff, state leadership, and site based staff to ensure seamless programmatic implementation and community awareness.
Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Impact
Community coordination (50%):
Collaborate with programmatic development colleagues, key community officials, partners, families, schools, and other cross-sector partners to lead engagement in strategic planning and implementation of community-based strategies to strengthen educational outcomes for our programs and communities around the state.
Facilitate regular, ongoing community stakeholder group meetings within targeted communities.
Training and Technical assistance (25%):
Collaborate with internal teams to deliver training opportunities across the state in the areas of child development, brain science, Kindergarten readiness, early literacy;
Provide ongoing direct training, support, and collaboration to early childhood partners across the state;
Support Community Engagement Coordinators and other locally-based early childhood and community engagement staff, as relevant.
Data collection (15%):
Maintain applicable programmatic and community engagement databases to facilitate and lead efficient and effective contact and relationship management.
Assist in developing and collecting surveys and implement other methods of evaluating and analyzing progress toward goals.
Provide needed data points for report writing upon request.
Engage in professional development (10%):
Participate in training and technical assistance activities including Save the Children sponsored group trainings, technical assistance site visits, audio conference calls and web based resource sharing and training activities.
Collaborate with other local, regional, and state-based and national staff to successfully align and integrate community engagement work into all elements of USPA rural education programming.
High School diploma or equivalent, plus at least 3 years of relevant experience
Demonstrated ability to think critically and abstractly.
Proven ability to build trust in communities with a variety of populations and assist people in managing change;
Demonstrated success in maintaining an environment where culturally diverse people can work together cooperatively and effectively to meet common goals;
Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships across cultural differences with public entities.
Demonstrated success influencing and motivating people to be involved without use of authority or force;
Proven knowledge and successful implementation of principles, practices, and techniques related to designing effective engagement strategies.
Proven success with project management principles, practices, techniques and tools.
Professional proficiency in verbal and written English, with the ability to present information and respond to questions from groups or individuals and create and produce documents for electronic or manual distribution.
Demonstrated experience in scheduling and event/training coordination.
Proven experience in leading small and large trainings for groups, and coaching, and/or mentoring others.
This position may require the incumbent to operate a motor vehicle to fulfill certain essential functions of the job. The incumbent should maintain a valid driver's license and remain in compliance with any Save the Children policies pertaining to the safe operation of motor vehicles.
