Job Summary

The City of Fort Collins is seeking a Specialist, City Planning (Associate Planner) to join our Community Development and Neighborhood Services department. This is a full-time salaried position with the City with an anticipated hiring salary range of $58,000 -$72,000 a year! The Associate Planner will primarily perform work related to development coordination and plan review, writing and interpreting land use policy and codes, and assisting with creation, monitoring, and implementation of long-range plans. Conducts research and analysis, prepares graphics and communication materials, helps maintain planning webpages, and reviews development proposals for consistency with policies and regulations. Supports community engagement and customer service related to current planning and development projects. This is a great opportunity to begin your career in the City's planning department. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Supports the team of City Planners in advancing adopted plans, policies and community priorities related to land use planning, development, sustainability and social equity.

  • Evaluates minor development review applications for compliance with City regulations and coordinates review by other departments and/or agencies.

  • Researches and reviews annexation requests for compliance with State and local laws.

  • Provides general information and technical assistance such as City's development standards to applicants and the public both in person and over the phone.

  • Researches, evaluates, verifies and presents background information and data pertaining to policies and projects.

  • Prepares and monitors statistical tabulations, computations, charts, reports and graphs to illustrate planning studies in areas such as population, transportation, housing, traffic, land use, zoning, historic preservation, proposed subdivisions, and public utilities.

  • Assists in coordination of meetings to the public, Boards and Commissions, Council, and task forces including graphics and other informational needs.

  • Prepares staff reports for minor projects.

  • Designs, creates, compiles and prepares computer graphics.

  • May prepare communication work products such as: public involvement plans, presentations, workshop/public meeting coordination, major document production, displays, webpages, newsletters, newspaper inserts and ads, and flyers.

  • May provide copy writing, editing, layout, design and production services.

  • May assist with data collection and tracking of performance metrics.

  • Participates as a team member on professional planning projects, including policy development, long-range planning projects, and development review process improvements.

  • May oversee and direct the work of temporary employees.

  • Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills via phone, email, and in-person communication.

  • Data entry skills.

  • Ability to use a variety of software programs to prepare graphics and documents.

  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.

  • Ability to develop computerized spreadsheets.

  • Basic math skills.

  • Photography and graphics knowledge and skills.

  • Ability to take a project/duty from concept to a finished product.

  • May require knowledge of Geographical Information Systems.

  • May require knowledge of print/layout procedures.

  • May require knowledge of ArcView and Adobe Creative Suite.

Required Qualifications

MinimumPreferredHigh School Diploma or GED and or functionally related licenses or certificates Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, or related field.

Experience Requirements

  • 2 or more years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
