Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

The purpose of the Diagnostic Radiology Special Procedures Technologist is to provide advanced skills and knowledge in service for patients undergoing the following surgical procedures: Vascular Angio, Neurovascular and Neuro studies requiring use of the Ziehm C-arm or Hybrid OR. This position performs a variety of invasive cardiology, radiology and neuro procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of interventional radiology, cardiology, and neurology disorders. In addition, this position provides technical assistance in the delivery of care specific to patients ranging in age from infants to geriatric, suffering from accident, illness or injury in the diagnostic radiology department, when not needed in the surgery department.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Interprets data and edits inappropriate data accurately

  • Troubleshoots all equipment malfunctions

  • Seeks to problem solve failures with Bio-Medical staff

  • Informs departmental leadership of equipment status

  • Provides experienced scrub assistance to these types of procedures, maintaining aseptic technique

  • May provide clinical decision-making assistance to physician during procedure and use of equipment compatibility

  • Always maintains good familiarity with interventional equipment and the use of each with the cardiac, interventional radiology and neurovascular anatomy and application

  • Anticipates physician needs and responds timely and appropriately

  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of room for safe and effective patient care

  • Ensures adequate supplies are available to perform procedures

  • Participates in product evaluations

  • Able to anticipate readily and competently assists with arrest or code blue situations

  • Implements ACLS/BLS protocols as indicated for patients

  • Assists with preparation, maintenance and implementation of all emergency equipment and supply carts

  • Communicates well with patient, family members, visitors, physicians and other staff; provides a supportive environment for the patient recognizing any educational deficits, psychosocial needs or reassurance

  • Promotes team building with physicians and other Caregivers

  • Notifies management of perceived deficits in co-workers' performance

  • Recognizes and communicates to management ongoing educational needs

  • Serves on departmental and hospital committee(s) or renders suggestions to management for improved effectiveness of departmental functions

  • Complies with hospital and departmental policies

  • Actively participates in departmental Process Improvement (PI, CQI) program

  • May function as a clinical preceptor, managing the critique of trainee competencies and deficits

  • Understand radiation physics and protection and applies to studies performed in CL

  • Maintains radiation ALARA by Monitoring Radiation Quality and Quantity during procedures including proper collimation, angulations and proper panning

  • Accept responsibility of limiting staff to unnecessary exposure by monitoring mounted lead integrity, lead apron/thyroid shield use and integrity, and leaded glass eye protection

  • Responsible for monitoring employee exposure monthly by maintaining monitoring badges and monthly reports

  • Educate staff through the preceptor role for new Caregivers, including ongoing critique of Caregivers competencies or deficits, continual assistance and guidance when necessary for all Caregivers and provide information to patient and family members regarding X-ray exposure

  • Proficient in the operation of all X-ray equipment to include generators, table operation, bi-plane, C-arms, tubes, image intensifiers, flat detectors, AGFA EI server, and portables. This also includes quality control testing, troubleshooting of problems in the above listed equipment and initiates/follows through on repairs and maintains quality improvement by documenting actions taken

  • Assure proper filtration being used and studies are properly identified prior to case startin

  • Responsible for correct study data and complete image transfer AGFA EI immediately following each case

  • Assists and educates physicians in image retrieval

  • Burn CD's when requested

  • Perform digital analysis to measure artery stenosis size and LV function; perform peripheral studies utilizing DSA technology

  • Has working knowledge of peripheral anatomy and proper positioning for cerebral, carotid, aortic arch, pulmonary, abdominal/visceral and lower extremity runoff; properly prepare for study including patient immobilization, patient education and communication with physician to obtain desired results

  • Assure proper equipment is available prior to study; contact sales representative if necessary

  • Serves as a resource person for team members

  • Performs daily required quality assurance studies of department X-ray equipment for each lab per manufacturers recommendation and records results.

Job Requirements

Work Experience • Current Radiography Experience required. • Experience working in a hospital environment. Education • Associate Degree in Radiologic Technology. • Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography. • Must be CPR certified. Minimum of AHA Heart Saver certification or BLS required. • ACLS certified within one year of employment Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Ability to problem solve and multitask. • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Must be able to perform work during periods of crisis and emergency situations. • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job. • Must be able to take on-call responsibilities including weekends and holidays. • Ability to work at multiple locations. • Adept with customer service. • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.
