SHIFT: 11PM-7AM (Rotating weekends and Holidays)

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Supervision of Diagnostic Radiology, the Special Procedures Technologist - X-Ray/Computed Tomography utilizes both General Diagnostic X-Ray equipment and computerized tomography scanners and produce general diagnostic and cross- sectional images of patients' internal organs and tissues for diagnosis of medical conditions. This includes prioritizing sequence of procedures, completion of actual exams, and following through with all necessary paperwork. Practice infection control and adhere to radiation safety measures.

Typical Duties

  • Initiates and completes all Radiology and CT procedures, producing quality images, demonstrates appropriate psychosocial interventions based on age and developmental status.

  • Works cooperatively with all personnel maintaining proper conduct and high ethical standards with all co-workers and patients.

  • Assesses requisitions for appropriateness.

  • Performs the two patient identification/verification process according to procedure. Verifies the patient by asking the patient to state his/her name and verify name with ID bracelet and /or time out sheet with the requisition prior to performing the procedure.

  • Takes radiographs as assigned following prescribed techniques and procedures

  • Prepares and administers to patients contrast agent necessary for the radiography of internal organs.

  • Prepares injectors with contrast media and assists with administration.

  • May initiate IV's for administration of contrast media for CT enhancement in accordance with department policy.

  • Maintains daily log sheets with patient's name nature of examination, area examined, and type of protective device used.

  • Assesses and observes patient for adverse reactions during procedure. Documents all allergic reactions according to department and hospital policy.

  • Prepares patient and set up equipment necessary for x-ray and or CT procedure, explains the procedure to the patient, assist and transfer patient to table, position patient's body or instruct patient how to position body for accurate radiographs and assist patient at the end of procedure.

  • Sets the appropriate scanning data on equipment such as milliamperage, exposing time, slice thickness, cradle increment, orientation (HF, FF, VF, VFH) scan fields, target factors algorithm.

  • Follows prescribed techniques in administering general and specific x-rays, adjust equipment, determine proper voltage, current and desired exposure time, arranges immobilization and support devices to obtain position of patient, adjust lead shield to protect unaffected parts of the patient's body, adjust the collimator to direct concentration of rays on the specified area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent (Must provide proof at time of interview)

  • Graduate of a two (2) year American Medical Association approved School of Radiologic Technology (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)

  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiology Technology (ARRT). in Radiology (Must provide proof at time of interview)

  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) in Computed Tomography (CT) (Must provide proof at time of interview)

  • Two (2) years of full-time experience as a staff X-Ray Technologist

  • Active licensure by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) (Must provide proof at time of interview)

  • Must have current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (Must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained)

  • Must be able to travel to CCH work sites to complete exams, when needed

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of fulltime experience as a CT Technologist or One (1) year documented on the job training in CT technology

  • Ability to distinguish between basic colors, other visual requirements

  • Ability to operate controls of equipment

  • Ability to distinguish regular/high pitched sounds, discriminate source of sound

  • Ability to push and/or pull using principles of body mechanics

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
