The Special Events Worker II works cooperatively with all Facilities staff members so that the work can be completed timely and efficiently and that events can go smoothly. Reporting to the Manager of Special Events & Projects, they have duties that include but are not limited to:

Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Clean hallways, entrance ways, stairways and elevators to support University operations as assigned and/or as scheduled

  • Vacuum and spot clean carpets and upholstery, free carpets of rips and strings, tape down and clean edges as needed; and clean all surfaces, and remove water marks and smudges from all surfaces

  • Clean and dust lamp shades and bulbs and replace burned out light bulbs; empty or sift ash urns; clean, wash and dust inside and outside ground floor level window sills of all exterior windows; clean and polish brass fixtures and rails; and dust and free handrails of cobwebs

  • Washes both sides of internally placed windows, washes and dusts high and low, pulls trash and cleans trash receptacles, cleans door tracks and thresholds, cleans elevator tracks, sweeps and mops floors free of debris and dirt, cleans stairwells, landings, stairways, exterior entrances, ramps and landings.

  • Perform minor carpentry, painting, and moving

  • Clean administrative spaces and classrooms

  • Spot clean and shampoo carpets and upholstery using acceptable methods of cleaning; dust and mop floors, and dust and clean supplies and return vents

  • Clean trash containers, dust high and low, cleans light diffusers, clean interior sills of exterior windows, clean interior and outside at ground level of exterior windows, dust and wipe venetian blinds; dust and polish furniture, and remove litter from planters

General Maintenance

  • Set up and break down equipment, including tables, chairs, podiums, stages, coat racks and other specialty items for university events

  • Perform these actions as assigned or as scheduled to ensure that events are set up accurately and timely and that the user is satisfied

Preventative Maintenance:

  • Ensure economic use of supplies and materials to conserve University resources

  • Draw and/or requisition supplies, part, and materials needed; and use such items economically to avoid undue costs

  • Keep supervisor informed of supply and material needs to ensure adequate inventory is maintained

  • Use safety equipment and protective clothing as required, including rubber gloves, aerosol-filter facemasks, and eye protection

  • Suggest improvements in service to improve unit operations

  • Provide supervisors and department management with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service

Additional Duties

  • Handle key security and related aspects of building security; and ensure security of keys, pagers or radios assigned

  • Return issued items to supervisor on a daily basis, and immediately notifies supervisor of any unaccounted for keys, pagers, or radios

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency

  • Valid driver's license from Maryland, District of Columbia, or Virginia

  • Qualify and to remain qualify for conformance with the University Driving Policy

  • Ability to read and understand product label instructions, as well as University policies and procedures

  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member

  • Ability to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and / or the Work Management Center

  • Willingness, availability, and flexibility to accommodate emergency situations such as staffing shortages and snow removal

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds of material; to push and/or pull equipment up to 100 pounds on a rolling dolly; to use arms and hands to lift and carry up to 35 five pounds and tools of the trade; to walk, to climb stairs and ladders, to bend and crouch, to reach and pull and to work on equipment; to see, hear, smell and to have a fundamental understanding of chemicals

Preferred qualification

One year of custodial work experience and event set up

The Special Events Worker II performs work both inside buildings and in outside spaces during all seasons and in all types of weather. They may be exposed to potentially dangerous and/or hazardous conditions and therefore is required to know and use appropriate and acceptable safety measures.

The Special Events Worker II is considered an emergency position that requires that incumbent report to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time, regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late or closing early.
