Facing History and Ourselves is looking for a Special Events intern to join the Brookline office for the summer (June-August 2019). Facing History and Ourselves is a nonprofit international educational and professional development organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.

Preferably, this intern will have passion for education, justice, democracy, diversity, and/or combatting bigotry in society. Through working with Facing History, the intern will learn about citizenship in the context of justice throughout historical events of several countries, such as the Holocaust and the eugenics movement in America. This intern should be willing to support the overall Brookline office within the Special Events and Organizational Advancement teams. The Special Events intern would report to the Special Events Manager.

Responsibilities:

This Special Events intern will be a key role in the assistance of event planning, compiling/analyzing data of event evaluations, and the creation of event materials. The intern applicant should be prepared to engage in the following:

  • Data/Software Experience

  • Help to update and maintain our centralized events system, Event Companion using Google Sites

  • Manage registrations and maintain records for org-wide events

  • Data Analysis

  • Event Materials

  • Assist with the ordering and management of branded merchandise

  • Help coordinate the org-wide bi-annual stationary order

  • Format sponsor logos for web use using online graphics tools

  • Research and create a brochure for guest use at our Leadership Retreat to assist with recommendations while travelling for Facing History

  • Assist with the creation and project management of a printed agenda for use at Leadership Retreat

  • Engagement with Regional Offices

  • Attend calls with our regional offices to learn about the events that Facing History does throughout the country and occasionally assist with tasks that are created from those meetings

  • Draft/edit event highlights from regions for posting on the Event Companion

  • General Organization/Administrative work for Special Events Team

  • Assist in updating Special Events Team records when new events are submitted by our regional offices

  • General organizational upkeep of the Special Events Team Drive with all event information

  • Clerical and administrative as assigned

Responsible for a wide range of tasks related to use, development and maintenance of computer applications in these various areas including MPC, PeopleSoft, and TSI. Provides assistance to management and administrative personnel through the extrapolation, interpretation and summarization of data for strategic business purposes. Responsibilities This position plays a key role in the development, monitoring and maintenance of the Institute's financial plans and processes. * Prepares monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc reports and furnishes data on an as needed basis. * Prepares analyses and journal entries, as required, to support the monthly general ledger closing process and annual budget development process. * Works with IT and other pertinent departments to research and resolve data discrepancies. * Assists with the development of the annual financial and statistical operating budget for the Institute, preparation of regulatory reports, and procedure cost development updates. * Assists with the development, implementation and operation of systems and processes to support the activities and goals of the Financial Planning (FP) department. * Participates in the business process redesign and improvement of key functions and tasks within the Financial Planning department. * Works closely with management in converting Institute-wide and departmental goals and objectives into financial plans. * Prepares complex analyses and executive summaries and initiates reviews as needed for data validation. * Provides training to Institute personnel on applications, reports and tools available. * Serves as a resource for other junior level staff within the department, acts as project leader and provides workflow direction to junior staff. * Triages problems that occur during absence of senior management and raises issues to next highest level. Qualifications * Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Accounting, Finance or related field is required; Master's preferred. * Minimum of 5-7 years of related work experience in the health care industry. * Requires superior computer skills in MS Office applications, automated general ledger system, etc. PeopleSoft experience strongly preferred. MPC, IDX, Harvest and/or TSI experience, along with experience with data mining, relational databases, and SQL query tools is a plus. * Must have superior judgment, discretion, interpersonal skills and communication skills to effectively work and communicate on sensitive political and confidential issues with clinical staff and senior management. * Must be able to function independently in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities. * Must pay particular attention to understanding the detail by performing reconciliations, implementing controls, and reviewing work completed. * Must be committed to a customer service philosophy. * Must be committed to working closely with others in a team-oriented approach.
