Liberty Point Behavioral Healthcare is a residential treatment facility that serves adolescent males (ages 13 to 22) with intellectual disabilities, psychiatric disorders, and behavioral problems. As part of the Staunton, Virginia community for more than 14 years, Liberty Point has provided treatment, education, rehabilitation, recreation, and cultural exposure through community outings, while also providing a safe environment. Our program prepares these young men for return to a home, a less restrictive environment, or to independent living.

Our primary focus is on encouraging constructive change and personal growth, learning positive ways to get appropriate attention, improving behavior choices, developing a sense of responsibility for actions, learning problem-solving skills, and developing thinking patterns that support positive relationships.

Our on-campus school, Liberty Point Academy, is seeking a certified Special Education Teacher to work with our young men with the support of Behavior Specialists and Paraprofessionals in the classroom, and a clinical team that supports and consults with the teaching team. Classrooms have up to 10 students each and are supplied with text books aligned to the SOLs as well as an internet-based remedial curriculum called Odysseyware. Each student has his own lap top computer for individual learning.

Job Requirements


  • Hold a valid Virginia or out-of-state teaching licensed in Special Education, General Curriculum K-12 or

  • Be eligible for a Virginia license in Special Education (must submit transcripts)

Liberty Point Academy is fully accredited by VAISEF and the student teaching requirement can be fulfilled at Liberty Point.

Salary is competitive and commensurate to education and years of experience.

Work hours are Monday thru Friday, 6:30am 3:00pm

VIEW JOBS 10/10/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-01-08T00:00 The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) is seeking a Teacher Assistant to provide instructional assistance and program support for classroom teachers and residential staff serving children with deafness, blindness, and/or sensory impaired multiple disabilities. This is a 10-month position with normal hours from 6:30am-3:30pm Monday-Friday. Hours differ depending on bus schedule and special assignments. Responsibilities include: * Provide instructional assistance and program support for assigned teachers not limited to academics, functional living skills, social skills, and communication skills. * Assist in the development of activities and experiences to complement instructional program and Individualized Education Program goals. * Provide student supervision and support in the residential program during morning hours and in home-going vehicles. * Manage behavior problems in accordance with students' behavior management plans and VSDB policies. * Substitute for classroom teachers by implementing lesson plans, supervising students, and managing behaviors. * Conducts teaching tasks and data collection as assigned and planned by teaching staff. * Working 1:1 or with small groups of students with significant cognitive and/or physical disabilities. * Provide assistance with personal hygiene and toileting for students with special needs, as appropriate and/or required, based on assignment. Minimum Qualifications * Associate's (or higher) Degree or completion of two years of undergraduate study. A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate, and successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment offered through the Educational Testing Service (ETS) within six months of employment may substitute for the educational requirement. * Paraprofessional certification for working with children with Autism or agreement to acquire within 60 days of employment date. * Valid Virginia Driver's License with driving record that reflects sense of responsibility for highway and passenger safety * Current CPR and First Aid certification required or must be obtained in accordance with school policies * Experience working with children and/or ability to provide guidance to children and maintain a safe environment for children * Proficiency level of ?Advanced?? in American Sign Language or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years based on job duties * Proficiency in Grade 2 Braille or agreement to obtain within three years * Ability to assist with the implementation of the Virginia Standards of Learning and the Aligned Standards of Learning * Skill in behavior management or willingness to attend training to acquire these techniques * Ability to provide instructional, personal care and behavior management support to children with sensory impairment, moderate to severe intellectual disability, and/or high needs disabilities * Ability to implement lesson plans and activities for students with sensory impairment * Ability to work independently and follow school/agency policies and procedures * Ability to interact with students in a patient, positive and sensitive manner in order to provide for their direct care and development. * Ability to monitor students during transportation to and/or from school via buses or state vehicles and act as the driver as needed and appropriate. * Ability to assist with personal care tasks in the residential hall including but not limited to waking students, assisting with personal hygiene, and ensuring dress code adherence. * Ability to transport students in state vehicles Physical Requirements: * Ability to lift and transfer children from wheelchairs, assist with their personal hygiene needs (including changing diapers/soiled clothing), ability to bend, squat, move rapidly, etc.to interact on a physical level with the children appropriately. .
