SUMMARY: The role of the Special Education Teacher is to help

students with special needs to maximize their potential

in meeting academic and behavior goals through the

implementation of uniquely individualized learning

programs.

EDUCATION/LICENSE/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

1.Bachelor's Degree in Special Education

2.Valid State of Indiana Teachers' License in Special Education

3.Must possess strong leadership and communication skills

4.Additional qualifications as the Board or the State of Indiana require

5.Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills

6.Must have the ability to:

  • Work with diverse populations

  • Work independently without direct supervision

  • Initiate and balance multiple work projects

  • Work both independently and collaboratively with a team

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

1.Participate in all steps of the IEP process.

2.Work closely with other teachers and district professionals to ensure that the school's special education program is successful and operating in compliance with federal and state regulations.

3.Manage and provide instruction for a caseload of students.

4.Develop, write and implement Individual Educational Plans.

5.Evaluate tests and assessments, complete report cards and conduct parent conferences.

6.Communicate regularly with parents/learning coaches of students with special needs to insure that their IEP goals are being met, and that their needs are addressed in a timely and appropriate fashion.

7.Consult with teachers and coordinate the implementation of specially designed instruction as defined in the IEP regarding students with specific needs and potential learning issues.

8.Schedule, help organize and participate in case conference committee meetings annually and as needed.

9.Participate in the school's Student Support Team; help teachers and learning coaches develop and implement program modifications and strategies for all students.



  1. Assist, as needed, with the organization and proper implementation of all paperwork, documentation and procedures for the IEP process.

  2. Assist with locating service providers for students needing related services as mandated by their IEPs.

  3. Maintain accurate and up-to-date data in the school's Learning Management System and special education software.

  4. Assist with administering state testing and coordinate the special adaptations that are required based on the IEP.

  5. Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to student, parents and/or staff.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculation.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to operate typewriter, ditto, photocopying machines and computers.

Ability to assume responsibility for supervising students, understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
