A Special Education Teacher will implement the Special Education programs and services in a college preparatory charter high school by integrating Special Education instructional programming with other instructional departments and schoolwide intervention initiatives. The teacher will maintains compliance with Special Education regulations (state and federal) for all students on their caseload and support Paraprofessionals assigned to students on their caseload. Teachers are expected to continually assesses for student growth and communicate student needs to general education staff. Teachers are required to co-teach with general education staff in their subject area to meet the needs of all students within the district as a proactive response to intervention.
MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS:
Teaches resource classes at the secondary level in the area of English and/or mathematics, along with co-teaching in a variety of academic settings.
Prepares, adapts, and delivers meaningful instructional material.
Develops suitable curricula and effective teaching methods based on assessment of students' needs.
Evaluates students' academic and behavioral progress continuously through formative assessments.
Supervises students in classrooms, school buildings and social-curricular activities.
Develops Individual Education Plans (IEP) and comprehensive evaluations for the individual student.
Creates and maintains student records, and prepares reports relative to the work.
Selects appropriate texts, learning aids, materials, and supplies.
Participates in teacher training, as required.
Maintains records and prepares reports and correspondence related to the work.
Communicates frequently with general education staff, supervisor, and parents.
Participates in the interventions and monitoring of all students through a response to intervention framework.
Performs related work as assigned.
ADDITIONAL STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attends weekly staff meetings.
Serves on staff committees, IEP teams, Intervention Assistance Teams, grade level teams, and curriculum teams as required.
Creates, offers, and teaches a one hour after-school elective once per week (electives are based on teacher/student interest).
Available to students one hour, twice per week for after-school tutoring.
Assists with student hallway, lunch room, and/or parking lot monitoring before, during, and/or after school as assigned by administration.
B.A. in Math, English, or Elementary Ed., M.A. preferred
Michigan Certification with at least one Special Education Endorsement - Learning Disabilities (SM) preferred
