HOURS

Full time 10-month position (190 contract days).

Contract Unit: This position is part of the Unit I (Certificated) bargaining unit.

FLSA: Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS

Eligibility for the Maryland State Department of Education teaching certificate with generic special education endorsement.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of student behavior management.

Knowledge, or willingness to learn and engage in the practices of conflict resolution, and non-violent crisis intervention strategies.

Strong human relation skills.

Knowledge of the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) preferred but not required.

Willingness to complete continuing education requirements necessary to maintain certification.

Knowledge of WCBOE curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, WCBOE policies, and effective instructional practices

Understanding of the teaching/learning process.

Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.

Ability to infuse technology into curriculum.

Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school-based staff, students, parents and community.

Excellent oral and written communication and human relation skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides academic and social emotional learning throughout the school day as determined by the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), and provides tiered interventions, including academic and social-emotional learning for students with an IEP, addressing social skills, prevention, de-escalation, and restoration/conflict resolution techniques.

Collaborates with staff to develop Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).

Gathers, analyzes, and maintains data to determine student progress towards behavior goals as outlined in the students' IEP and/or Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).

Provides proactive approaches to behavior management and provides classroom support staff with instructional plans for small groups or individual students.

Utilizes and implements appropriate non-violent crisis intervention procedures as needed. This includes de-escalation intervention strategies and techniques based on training provided by the district.

Creates and provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students.

Provides an instructional program to meet the needs of all students including students with disabilities.

Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.

Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like, communicates these objectives to students.

Establishes learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, requirements of WCBOE curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development.

Plans for and utilizes instructional methods, resources and formative and summative assessment which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.

Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of Special Education Department staff as required.

Provides input when necessary to students' IEPs.

Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, WCBOE policy and administrative regulation.

Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.

Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.

Establishes relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community that reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.

Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for instructional assistants and volunteers.

Appraises his/her own effectiveness and demonstrates successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence by actively participating in professional development opportunities.

Participates in school management and shares responsibility for the total school program.

Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.

Performs related work and duties as assigned.

Attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the negotiated agreement.
