Position: 6th Grade Special Education Teacher

Location: Oliver Middle School

Start Date: August 28, 2024

Candidates hired for this position are eligible to receive a $1,000 Sign-On Bonus. Contact the Human Resources Department at (585) 637-1915 for more information.

Sign-on payments will be made after the candidate has worked in the position they were hired for, based on the below schedule:

  • $400 paid after 60 days of work.
  • $300 paid after 120 days of work.
  • $300 paid after 180 days of work.

Position Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Special Education Teacher to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs in a school setting. The Special Education Teacher will collaborate with general education teachers, support staff, and parents to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that fosters the academic, social, and emotional growth of every student.

Responsibilities:

Curriculum/Instructional Planning and Implementation:

  • Develops and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with special needs.

  • Utilizes a variety of teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and engage students in the learning process and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs.

  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.

  • Coordinates with other elementary professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.

Classroom Management:

  • Establishes and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes respects and cooperation among students.

  • Implements positive behavior intervention strategies to support students in developing appropriate social and behavioral skills.

  • Works closely with the school's behavior support team to address challenging behaviors and implement effective interventions.

  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a positive learning atmosphere in the classroom.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring:

  • Conducts ongoing assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.

  • Regularly assess student progress using a variety of assessment tools and provide constructive feedback to both students and parents.

  • Collaborates with colleagues to analyze student performance data and tailor instructional approaches accordingly.

  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.

Parent Communication:

  • Regularly communicates with parents and guardians regarding student achievements, challenges, and overall progress.

  • Fosters open and effective communication with parents through regular updates, parent-teacher conferences, and other communication channels.

  • Works collaboratively with parents to support students' academic and social development.

Professional Development:

  • Participates in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with educational trends, teaching methodologies, and curriculum advancements. This includes attending workshops, seminars, and professional meetings such as faculty and department/grade level meetings.

  • Collaborates with fellow teachers and staff to share best practices and enhance the overall learning experience for students.

Other:

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and NYS Certification in Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6.

  • Strong knowledge of elementary curriculum, instructional strategies, and educational trends.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Patience, flexibility, and a genuine passion for working with children.

  • Ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
