Special Education Teacher

(Behavioral Disabilities Program - Self-Contained)

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Special Services, the Certified Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with social, emotional and behavioral dysregulation.

Qualifications:

  • Valid New Jersey Teacher of the Handicapped or Teacher of Students with Disabilities and a content-specific certification.

  • Experience working in a Behavioral Disabilities/Emotional Regulation Impairment setting (preferred)

  • Strong assessment skills; be knowledgeable in a variety of teaching strategies and a demonstrated ability to work harmoniously in a multicultural, diverse community

  • Responsible for the education and training of students demonstrating significant social, behavioral, and emotional needs

  • Knowledgeable of, and the ability to, implement classroom adaptations, instructional strategies, and behavioral interventions

  • Knowledge of current special education methodologies and co-regulation techniques

  • Experience working with students with a wide range of academic abilities

  • Experience working in a co-teaching environment, if appropriate

  • Patient, resourceful, reflective, and resilient

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Responsibilities:

  • Develop instruction to meet the unique needs of students with social, emotional, and behavioral dysregulation

  • Evaluate and assess student progress against instructional objectives

  • Provide research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP

  • Assess student progress and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques

  • Employ various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable student success

  • Create a positive learning experience with emphasis on individualized instruction using positive behavioral interventions and support

  • Comply with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations

  • Completes all district and state reporting requirements

  • Employ and implement a consistent classroom structure to encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and mutual respect consistent with school policies

  • Collaborate and consult with educational professionals and community service providers

  • Provide consultation to general education classroom teachers and related service providers

  • Develop modifications, and accommodations consistent with student classification

  • Implement behavior modification plans, and assist in the use of adaptive equipment (if applicable)

  • Design and implement behavior plans to facilitate and support student engagement and prosocial behavior in the classroom, on school premises and/or during school activities

  • Assist and support building and District staff and parents in the development, implementation, and revision of student behavior intervention plans and IEPs

  • Collect appropriate student performance data for determining the extent to which students is meeting/achieving academic and behavioral success related to their goals.

  • Implement current special education methodologies and co-regulation techniques

  • Responsible for the education and training of students demonstrating significant social, emotional and behavioral dysregulation.

  • Develop quality IEPs that include SMART goals and data-driven present levels of academic achievement
