SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT:

The certificated staff member will work under the direction of the Building Principal and the Executive Director for Student Support Services in cooperation with general and special education staff, to develop and coordinate instructional programs that meet the needs of special education students with an emphasis on closing the achievement gap, teaching subjects to include both Math and English.

The classroom Special Education Resource teacher will create a class environment that implements the district articulated curriculum for their content area that provides positive learning experiences for all students, including providing each student with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to lead self-sufficient, healthy, productive, socially responsible lives to the best of their individual potential. The teacher will establish positive relationships and rapport with students, parents, and staff members. The teacher will document student progress, set appropriate learning goals, design lesson plans, plan activities and outcomes; address specific educational needs of all students; communicate feedback to student's parents and the administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals. The teacher will use assessment results to guide and implement differentiated instructional strategies. The teacher will work collaboratively with staff, attend department meetings, and participate in extracurricular activities where appropriate. The teacher will maintain professional competence through in-service education, coursework, and professional growth activities, including active participation in our Professional Learning Community (PLC) process.

GENERAL LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS:

  • Recommend solutions to a wide variety of issues for the purpose of addressing the short and long-term needs of the District.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares teaching materials and reports for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.

  • Implements district adopted curricula that is appropriate for content area that integrate with the Washington State Learning Standards.

  • Reports incidents of child abuse, altercations, and substance abuse for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to the educational code of ethics and district/school policies.

  • Provides clear and focused instruction for all students by using a variety of teaching strategies to meet the needs of all students to assure successful learning through the articulated curriculum to achieve district/state student learning standards.

  • Provides on-going assessment and monitors students for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectation and goals by using quality classroom-based assessment and/or district/state assessment tools.

  • Establishes and maintains a standard of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, safe and productive learning environment.

  • Communicates positively and regularly with parents and/or legal guardians including areas of growth, student progress, teacher expectations, developing a meaningful collaboration between home and school.

  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Establishes and maintains collaborative working relationships with staff, administrators, parents, support groups, governmental and community service agencies.

  • Collaborates with paraeducators, volunteers, and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program.

  • Maintains appropriate confidential reports, records, and files in compliance with state/federal law.

  • Demonstrates experience and sensitivity that affirms individuality and diversity.

  • Attends and participates in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and/or building principal in order to accomplish the objectives of the position, including but not limited to on-going professional staff development, weekly PLC meetings and enrichment days.

  • Educates special needs students within the regular classroom environment in collaboration with staff.

  • Provides assistance and guidance to individual students needing intervention to meet standard, as well as students who need enrichment.

CONDITIONS:

May be required to deal with distraught students/parents/staff. May be exposed to infectious diseases.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge and skill in instructional principles, methods, and techniques.

Knowledge of current state assessments and graduation requirements.

Knowledge and implementation of district adopted curricula.

Knowledge of procedures/policies in the student referral process.

Skill in classroom management, student discipline, and developing positive techniques for improving student behavior.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree with appropriate educational endorsement.

Experience with behavior disordered and at-risk students preferred.

Required Licenses/Special Requirements

Washington State Teacher Certification with endorsement in Special Education or in the process of obtaining certification.

May be required to have a valid State of Washington Driver's license.

Valid First Aid/CPR Card may be required.

Completed employment application and successful background check upon hire.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

District/Building Administrators as appropriate.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Required to deal with a wide range of staff expertise; will experience frequent interruptions and the need to remain flexible to meet the needs of others; may deal with angry or distraught people; experience demands from a diversity of others, including students, community and staff; involves sitting, walking and standing; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; in some positions the necessary and appropriate instructional methods may require specific positions and movements, and sufficient stamina and exertions, to demonstrate techniques properly for the safety of others, or to conduct or direct staff; may teach in a room without telephone communication; will involve attendance at meetings beyond regular business hours periodically.

BARGAINING UNIT: OEA

FLSA: Exempt

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Work Year: 180 days aligned with the academic school calendar, plus 4 Enrichment Days (August 27, 28, 29, 2024, and February 18, 2025)

Paid Hours: 7.5 per day, including 30 minute duty free lunch period

Time of Contract Hours: Work day starts 30 minutes before the student bell schedule and concludes 30 minutes after the student day ends at the work location

Salary: 2023-24 OEA Salary Schedule A* (Includes Base contract, Enrichment Days contract and Technology Stipend, at minimum) *This Position will be paid at the 2024-25 OEA Salary Schedule

Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours an employee is anticipated to work during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Other benefits include VEBA, which is a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) and serves as a way to contribute dollars on a pre-tax basis for out of pocket benefits costs, whether it be for medical, dental or vision premiums, or any other out of pocket medical expenses. This benefit is available, based on the outcome of annual voting of employees by group.
