POSITION TITLE:Special Education Release Head Teacher (SY2018-2019)


SUMMARY: Establishes a cohesive working environment amongst staff and families by providing data and assistance to facilitate student growth. This may include the following responsibilities:


  • Assist in the facilitation of initial EDT/IEP meetings as well as performance-based reevaluation; will also facilitate addendum IEPs when appropriate, as well as facilitate FBA and BIP Meetings.

  • Will facilitate data collection for the development of FBAs.

  • Assist in the development and management of a Master Calendar for IEPs, re-evals and MDTs at school.

  • Schedule, plan and chair school-based Special Education department meetings.

  • Disseminate information to the school's Special Education Staff.

  • Arrange for IEP coverage for teachers.

  • Coordinate the management and maintenance of confidential files.

  • Coordinate the transfer of the confidential files with the support of the records clerk.

  • Provide technical assistance regarding special education laws, policies and procedures.

  • Collaborate with sponsor teachers, feeder schools and administration regarding special education projections.

  • Collaborate with appropriate staff in maintenance and ordering of special education forms.

  • Assist in the development of the Special Education portion of the master schedule.

  • Coordinate textbook adoption and material ordering for the department.

  • Update, coordinate and distribute 20-day class lists to Special Education staff.

  • Coordinate progression process for the school.

  • Complete and submit transportation forms for any student who may not yet have a sponsor teacher.

  • Collaborate with the special education school contact and IEP specialist for IEP training.

  • Assist the Diagnostician with the compilation of out of district/state student transfer information.

  • Collaborate with the Diagnostician on the scheduling of EDT/lEPs for out of District/State transfer students.

  • Create a system for the scheduling of special education students according to their IEP's so that the responsibility is shared among several school personnel and does not rest solely with the Head Special Education Teacher.

  • Other duties, as assigned by Administration.


Preferred education, experience, knowledge, skills and/or abilities:

  • Experience with Collaboration and Leadership

  • Experience with Positive Behavior Supports (PBS)


Required education, licensure, certification, experience and/or skills:

  • Level II NM Licensure in Education/Special Education

  • At least 1 year experience working with Special Needs Students

  • At least 1 year experience working with TieNet

Preferred education, experience, knowledge, skills and/or abilities:

  • Masters' Degree (w/Level III NM Licensure) in Education, Special Education, or Educational Leadership (or capable of obtaining Level III NM Licensure)

  • At least 5 years experience working with Special Needs Students

  • At least 2 years experience working with TieNet

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation: * Cooperates in the development and implementation of the district program of instruction. * Plans and implements a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and complies with State Department of Education Standards and the APS Board of Education goals and objectives and individual student IEP plans if appropriate. * Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals. Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, assignments, units and projects in harmony with curriculum goals and communicates the objectives to students. * Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives. * Establishes and maintains standards of appropriate student behavior and discipline as prescribed in the school handbook and IEP plans of each student and to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom and assists in its maintenance campus-wide. * Evaluates the learning progress of students on a regular basis. * Prescribes effective learning programs and initiates referrals to appropriate personnel when concerns arise. * Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required. * Administers standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program. * Establishes and maintain open lines of communication with students and parents concerning students' academic, social and behavioral progress. * Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students. * Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated. * Selects and requests appropriate books and instructional materials and maintains required inventory records. * Provides directions and materials for substitute teachers.
