Description: Special Education Paraprofessional

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain confidentiality of all records and documents.

  • Assist with the implementation of any student plan.

  • Work closely with students, teachers, nurse and staff.

  • Maintain a safe and caring environment.

  • Maintain and keep current records and data; prepare and supply reports, as needed.

  • Consult with and assist special ed. teacher in working with students, as needed.

  • Work with individual or small groups of students as directed by classroom teacher.

  • Supervise students in community-centered or optimal learning environments.

  • Prior to commencing employment, professional training will be provided as required.

Competencies and Qualifications:

  • Prefer experience with students with challenging behaviors

  • Sensitive to and aware of student needs

  • Courteous verbal communication

  • Team approach

  • Computer skills: using software to monitor student performance; communicating with teachers via email

  • Positive human relations, ability to build rapport with children is essential

  • Knowledgeable and understanding of child development

  • Able to operate office machines such as copiers, and/or computer or the willingness to learn

  • Required by State of CT to be fingerprinted

  • Minimum of high school diploma; AA or BA degree preferable and any State of CT requirements

Working Conditions: This is a 10-month position (180 days), 6.5 hours per day, $18.33/hour

REPORTS TO: * Director of Pupil Services for supervision and evaluation. * Special Education Teacher(s) for daily assignments, guidance. JOB GOALS: * The Job Coach works under the supervision of the Director of Pupil Services and the Special Education Teaching Staff at Housatonic Valley Regional High School to support students with a variety of disabling conditions who are in the process of acquiring school to work transition skills. * The Job Coach will be a mentor, eager to support students at the job site. The Job Coach will help students discover their strengths and weaknesses in the work settings, guiding them to develop employable skills. Candidate must possess excellent communication skills and demonstrate an ability to task analyze employer expectations and help establish these in a manner that is meaningful for student workers. JOB PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: * Support Special Education Teacher(s) in developing and implementing effective job coaching and employment plans, including the recruitment of prospective partner employers. * Communicate with students to understand their post-secondary goals and ambitions. * In collaboration with Special Education and Pupil Services personnel, assist students to discover and overcome their personal barriers and set goals. * Take data in support of the assessment of the strengths of students and teach them to use their strengths effectively. * Guide students in learning to complete job tasks. * In collaboration with Special Education and Pupil Services personnel, help in the development of motivation and skills. * Provide coaching in effective job search techniques. * Participate in addressing workplace accommodations for people with disabilities. * Support Special Education Teacher(s) in monitoring and documenting progress of students.
