The duties include but are not limited to:

  • Lifts and restrains students.

  • Assists the students in physical tasks such as putting on and taking off of outerwear, moving from room to room, and using the lavatory.

  • Assists students with basic physical needs such as toileting, diapering, clothing changes, personal hygiene, feeding, or prescribed exercise.

  • Works with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.

  • Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing materials or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.

  • Works with students to control behavior and assists with instruction to reinforce academic skills and daily living skills. Accompanies the students during trips to the office or to the school nurse when necessary.

  • Establishes a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the students without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.

  • Serves as a resource person to the student personnel evaluation team when conferring about one of the students.

  • Assists with gross motor development activities by monitoring, demonstrating, and participating in floor activities such as tumbling, aerobics, running, jumping, hopping, skipping, etc.

  • Assists in supervising field trips and walking tours.

  • Monitors class during meals and monitors personal hygiene activities (hand washing).

  • Performs other job-related duties as designated by the principal or special education teacher.

  • Maintains high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of at least 48 semester hours of study at an institution of higher education that was appropriately accredited per the Alabama State Department of Education at the time the courses were taken; OR
  • An Associate's Degree or higher documented on an official transcript from an institution of higher education that was appropriately accredited per the Alabama State Department of Education at the time the degree was earned; OR
  • A passing score of 3 or higher on the state-prescribed WorkKeys Assessments. The tests currently required are Applied Math, Work Place Documents and Business Writing.

Official Transcripts and Score Reports documenting successful completion of all education requirements will be required prior to beginning work in the position.

Salary Range: From/To Beginning pay - $20,202.00.

Additional Job Information

Applicants selected for classified positions must undergo (or have undergone) an ABI/FBI criminal history background check (fingerprinting administered through sites selected and approved by the MCPSS and State of Alabama Education Department) and be declared suitable and fit to teach under state law. Applicants selected must also pass a drug-screening test via forms provided by Human Resources during the selection process.
