POSITION: Special Education Paraprofessional III

LOCATION: Carson High School

OPEN TO: Employees of Carson City School District and external applicants.

SALARY & BENEFITS: Salary Range: $21.73 to $28.11 (7 hours per day, 181 days per year) with benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement. Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits and personal leave. The prior position must be similar in nature and written verification of employment from the previous employer must be submitted to Human Resources upon employment. Per Administrative Regulation No. 311.1.

NOTE: This position begins the 2024 school year. This position is strictly contingent upon sufficient funding, and student enrollment.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in child development, physical therapy or a closely related field; and experience performing the work of a para professional in a special education program for disabled students; or experience at or equivalent to experience as a Para Professional III for the Carson City School District, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below. Must have an Associates Degree or completion of two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (verified by official transcript) or pass the state-approved academic proficiency test (Para Professional Assessment). All applicants must meet all highly qualified requirements pursuant to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) regulations. Bilingual preferred.

Para Professionals are not guaranteed a specific site. They may be assigned to locations that will best serve the educational needs of the students and the school district. Each position is contingent upon the number of students with these particular needs remaining enrolled in the school district.

Must be able to pass the pre-employment drug screen, physical, and lift test.

This is a replacement position.

Position Summary

The School District Paraprofessional III in the Alternate Standards Placement Classroom plays a crucial role in supporting students and teachers in an inclusive educational setting. This position involves assisting teachers in classroom operations and providing instruction to students with various disabilities. These disabilities may include learning disabilities, serious emotional disabilities, severe intellectual and physical challenges, visual impairment, and hearing impairment.

As a Paraprofessional III, you will contribute to the implementation of individual education programs for each student. You will be an integral part of the classroom, supporting students academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition to these responsibilities, clerical duties will also be performed as required. Bilingual proficiency is preferred for this role.

Your commitment to creating a positive and inclusive learning environment is essential. You will work closely with the classroom teacher and other support staff to facilitate student engagement, foster academic progress, promote social-emotional development, and provide assistance with tasks such as toileting, diapering, and lifting students when necessary.

Salary Range

$21.73/hr. to $27.56/hr. plus employer paid medical, dental, vision and life insurance, and retirement benefits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instructional support: Assist the classroom teacher in delivering instruction to students with disabilities, including but not limited to learning disabilities, serious emotional disabilities, severe intellectual, behavioral and physical challenges, visual impairment, and hearing impairment.

  • Implement individual education programs (IEPs) and behavior intervention plans: Work collaboratively with the teacher to implement the goals and objectives outlined in each student's IEP and behavior intervention plan. Provide support and accommodations as needed to help students succeed.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment: Promote a safe, supportive, and inclusive classroom atmosphere that encourages student participation and engagement. Help create a sense of belonging and acceptance for all students.

  • Support academic progress: Assist students in completing assignments, staying on task, and reinforcing learning concepts. Provide individual or small-group instruction as directed by the teacher. Adapt materials and instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of students.

  • Promote social-emotional development: Foster the development of social skills, self-regulation, and emotional well-being in students. Encourage positive peer interactions and help de-escalate and resolve conflicts when necessary.

  • Assist with personal care tasks: Provide assistance with toileting, diapering, eating, and other personal care tasks as required by individual students. Follow proper protocols and maintain student dignity and privacy.

  • Collaborate with the teacher and support staff: Work closely with the classroom teacher, other paraprofessionals, and related service providers to coordinate and implement appropriate interventions and supports. Share observations and insights about student progress and behavior. Display a cooperative attitude, actively contribute to teamwork, readily collaborate with others, and foster a positive team environment.

  • Supervise and ensure student safety: Monitor students during transitions, recess, lunchtime, and other activities to ensure their safety and well-being. Implement behavior management strategies as directed by the teacher.

  • Maintain documentation and records: Keep accurate records of student progress, behavior incidents, and any other relevant information. Complete required paperwork and reports in a timely manner.

  • Professional development and training: Participate in professional development activities and training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills related to special education practices and behavioral supports. Stay updated on best practices, instructional strategies, and policies in the field

Qualifications

  • High School graduation or equivalent.

  • Completion of formal or informal training in child development or a related field.

  • Experience as a Paraprofessional in a special education program or equivalent preferred.

  • Bilingual proficiency preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of child development, learning patterns, and behaviors.

  • Understanding of disabilities and related coping techniques and safety hazards.

  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and record-keeping.

  • Ability to interact effectively with students, support instruction, and maintain composure in challenging situations.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

  • Good physical condition and ability to pass a physical examination.

  • Frequent reaching, handling, and fine motor activities.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily in a climate-controlled school setting.
