Job Title: Special Education Inclusion Teacher

Reports to: Campus Administrator

Position: Full-time

Dept. / School: East or West Campus

Primary Role and Purpose:

Working under the direction of the Campus Administrator, the Special Education Inclusion Teacher assumes professional responsibility for providing specialized learning experiences and supervision of students with disabilities in mainstream setting of a regular classroom. The focus of the Special Education Inclusion Teacher is to develop in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to meet and exceed the State Core Curriculum Content Standards as outlined in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for the student, using approved curricula and directives of the school. Achieving academic excellence requires that the Special Education Inclusion Teacher work collaboratively with other members of the school staff, particularly the regular classroom teacher and the parents of each student.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university is required.

  • Valid Texas Teacher Certification in Special Education is required.

Skills:

  • Ability to work with students who may suffer from acute or catastrophic illness or injury.

  • Ability to provide learning experiences in a variety of settings.

  • Knowledge of child growth and development, children with disabilities, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning and children with exceptional needs.

  • Broad knowledge of curriculum / instruction, and knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the lives and education of students.

  • Knowledge of current educational research.

  • Considerable judgement, tact, patience, sensitivity, and flexibility are required to deal with students from varied socioeconomic backgrounds and learning styles.

  • Creative and adaptive thinking required to match teaching objectives, learning strategies, and instructional plans with students' abilities.

  • Ability to effectively manage student behavior.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to set priorities and meet critical deadlines.

  • Highly proficient and skilled in multiple computer applications necessary to do the job well, including but not limited to Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to work effectively with others and establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; strong focus on customer service and teamwork.

  • Demonstrate strong work ethic, accept responsibility, and the ability to be self-motivated.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies

  • Implement the education program and comprehensive related services as outlined in the students Individual Education Plans (IEP).

  • Provide resource/content mastery or alternative collaborative setting services for students who have more significant need for direct instruction based on the student's IEP.

  • Focus on each student demonstrating achievement in the Core Curriculum Content Standards as outlined in the IEP.

  • Maintain records indicating the progress of the student in achieving the objectives of the IEP and the class or course.

  • Administer assessments including alternate assessments of those students who are not able to participate in the customary curriculum tests administered annually.

  • Write all annual IEPs and initiate re-evaluations as mandated by state/federal regulations.

  • Monitor the implementation and provide information about completed goals and objectives, communicating closely with members of the ARD Committee, general education teachers, and parents about the progress of the student.

  • Set up and direct all ARD Committee meetings as required by state/federal regulations.

  • Communicate regularly with the parents to nurture a supportive and cooperative relationship between home and school.

  • Assist the student who is physically challenged with movement to participate in activities or with other physical needs, when necessary.

  • Assist the professional staff through individual consultation and/or staff development sessions with understanding the needs of exceptional students and with strategies and approaches in dealing with problems in learning, behavior, or adjustment.

  • Provide guidance to the regular education teacher on how to modify instruction to meet individual student needs.

  • Work cooperatively with adults assigned ot the classroom (e.g. paraprofessionals, student teachers, parents, and volunteers), establishing clear expectations for roles and responsibilities.

  • Serve as a role model for students, dressing and grooming professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning acceptable responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the honorable profession of teaching.

  • Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration, instructional staff, students, parents, and representatives of resource agencies within the community.

  • Notify immediately appropriate personnel of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic.

Growth and Development

  • Help students assess and enhance their study methods and habits.

  • Produce formal and informal testing to evaluate student success.

  • Coordinate and manage extracurricular duties as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus administrator.

  • Serve as an example for students and support the mission of the charter

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Prepare classroom to enhance learning and to aid in physical, social and emotional development of students.

  • Control student behavior in agreement with the student handbook.

  • Ensure necessary and reasonable measures are taken to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

  • Provide input of book, equipment and material selection.

  • Participate in curriculum and program development, and in the section of materials and equipment to support instruction.

Communication

  • Establish communication rapport with parents/guardians, students, administration and teachers.

  • Maintain professional development through such activities classes, seminars, workshops, and professional journals; provide technical guidance to less experienced teachers.

  • Monitor student behavior both inside and outside the classroom (e.g., during class, in hallways between classes, and during assemblies, extracurricular activity meetings or events, fire/emergency drills, or other group activities.)

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events as required.

Other

  • Keep current on and abide by state and charter regulations and policies.

  • Gather, manage and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.

  • Be active in faculty meetings and assist in staff committees as necessary.

  • Perform and fulfill professional responsibilities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and stand, and talk or hear and sometimes walk. Some movement throughout the classroom is generally necessary to facilitate learning. Occasionally, the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally stoop, bend, push or lift items. The employee is directly responsible for safety, wellbeing, and work output. Light lifting of materials and other objects associated with a classroom environment is required (e.g., laptops, books, teaching aids, up to approximately 20-40 lbs. )

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material on computers, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires extensive use of computers and frequent use of hands and fingers to enter or type data. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

It is expected that on occasion, field trips may be made. Individual should be willing to contribute directly and indirectly to the development of children both inside and outside the classroom, which may include working hours in addition to the regular school day. Regular attendance is required for this position.

Individual must maintain emotional control under stress.
