POSITION: Special Education Coordinator

STARTING DATE: 2024-2025 School Year

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Valid Illinois PEL with LBS1, School Psychologist, School Social Worker, or Speech Pathologist endorsement

2.At least 5 years of successful special education or related services experience.

3.Administrative endorsement on a PEL.

4.Director of Special Education endorsement, preferred.

5.Experience as a Local Education Agency (LEA) representative, preferred.

6.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

1.Work Year: 200 days

2.Fringe Benefits: Health, dental, and life insurance plus sick leave, personal business leave.

3.Salary: Based upon experience.

General Duties

  • To assist in maintaining high quality of services for students, staff, parents, and community members who utilize the services assigned to this position.

  • To assist immediate supervisor in carrying out the duties assigned to that position.

  • To strive for positive and collegial public relations with the staff, students, parents, and community members.

  • To maintain confidentiality in all areas assigned to this position.

  • To act as a role model for students and staff and to provide leadership, in the areas assigned to this position.

Qualifications

  • Valid Illinois PEL with LBS1, School Psychologist, School Social Worker, or Speech Pathologist endorsement.

Performance Responsibilities of the Special Services Building Coordinator

  • Coordinate and Monitor Special Education Services in the schools and Out-of-District Placements

  • Support and implement a district-wide philosophy of least restrictive environment for special education students and communicate it to school administration, staff, parents, and community members.

  • Assume responsibility for the implementation and observation of all Board policies and Local, State, and Federal regulations as they apply to special education student and staff.

  • Keep informed of all legal requirements governing special education and implement State and Federal regulations as they apply to special education students and staff.

  • Acts as a leader and resource for the department teachers and related service staff regarding best practice in terms of IEP development, placement, programming, and supports for students.

  • Implement procedures for referral, placement, evaluation, assignment, and re-appraisal of students with regard to the special education services program, including but not limited to: Child Find, initial case studies, Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings, annual reviews, re-evaluations, transition plans, and Manifestation Determination Review meetings (if applicable).

  • Oversee the placement of individual students with special needs in outside educational programs best suited to their requirements and facilitate the return of these students to the least restrictive environment when appropriate.

  • Conduct special education meetings and training to keep staff knowledgeable about policy changes, new programs, current best practices, and other pertinent information regarding special education.

  • Supervise and coordinate special education classroom programs and all matters relating to the organization, conduct, and staffing of all special education service delivery.

  • Assist in curriculum development, delivery of specially-designed instruction, differentiated curriculum and instructional practices, including accommodations and modifications, within the entire educational program for special education students.

  • Assist the schools in developing school improvement plans that incorporate special education students.

  • Provide guidance to teachers and staff to ensure vertical alignment in curricular programs for special education students aligned with the District's core curriculum.

  • Evaluate curricula and activities for special education students to ensure that best practices and scientifically based instruction and methodology are implemented in the classroom.

  • Provide inventory control of all supplies, materials, and texts used by special education personnel.

  • Consult with parents and respond to parent requests or issues

  • Attend conferences, meetings, workshops, district committees, community and public agencies, and seminars, for the purposes of compliance, conveying and gathering information regarding a wide variety of subjects required to carry out administrative responsibilities pertaining to special education.

  • Assist in recruitment, selection, recommendation for hiring, oversight and evaluation of any special education certified and classified personnel (paraprofessionals and support staff) as required by law.

  • Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents legally required or administratively useful.

  • Responsible for any other pertinent duties related to special education and the continuous improvement of the school system as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
