PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Assist the special education teacher to provide for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher, behavior specialist, and/or family specialist.
Provide intensive behavior intervention and social skills instruction to students with emotional and behavioral disabilities
Provide support for staff regarding students' behavioral needs
Provide effective implementation of the students' IEP and BIP under the supervision of the classroom teacher
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification in one of the following:
Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate
High School Diploma or GED
Experience or training in working with students with students with behavioral needs preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills
Ability to work well with children with emotional and behavioral disabilities
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures and backgrounds
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Maintain confidentiality
Keep accurate records of students with disabilities and furnish to appropriate personnel in a timely manner
Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus duty, playground, and community
Assist teacher, diagnostician, or behavior specialist in maintaining, copying, transferring confidential folders and records as required
Assist special needs students with individual tasks as may be required including, but not limited to, transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene, or compliance training
Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention, including restraint when necessary according to law
Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and safety needs through in-service and/or teacher direction
Work with and/or prepare materials for individual students or small groups to develop skills through instructional activities under teacher direction
Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students
Perform other duties that enhance the safety, security, and instructional needs of the campus as requested
Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and legal/local board policies
Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned
Maintain mental and physical demands required by the assigned job

Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
