Special Education Assistant Teacher - Westfield High School/Transition Program

QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least two years of college. Prefer candidates with Bachelors' Degree in education, psychology or related field

• Demonstrated interest in youth and education

• Ability to manage individual and small groups of students while working as part of an education team

• Evidence of the emotional maturity and stability necessary for the specialized work involved

• Such additional qualifications as the Westfield Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable

REPORTS TO:
Special Education Teacher

JOB GOAL:
To assist the teacher in fulfilling all behavioral, social, and academic goals for special needs children.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assists the teacher with instruction directly and/or indirectly

• Assist the teacher with the selection and utilization of educational materials and general supplies

• Assist the teacher in administering achievement and/or diagnostic testing including the collection of student academic, behavioral and adaptive skills data

• Assist the teacher in implementation of social and or behavior modification programs

• Assist the teacher with general classroom maintenance

• Assist the teacher in supervision of students involved in school activities

• Assume responsibility of the classroom teacher in his/her absence

• Participate in staff development programs required by the Building Principal
  ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work is generally conducted within school building. Ability to travel throughout the school building is necessary. Position involves sitting and the ability to travel from one place to another within building. Work is moderate in nature with regular lifting of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds with some pulling and pushing or reaching above, generally of desk and file drawers. Frequent use of hands to operate keyboards and telephones and other office equipment

• Regular attendance is an essential function of the job

• Trainings in Safety Care required

• Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Covered under the WEA (Unit D) contract

EVALUATION:
The performance of this job will be evaluated as per the WEA (Unit D) Contract.
