Description

Performs a variety of responsible and specialized tasks in the physical care and classroom instruction of students with disabilities; and assists students with disabilities in meeting the physical requirements of attending school.

CURRENT VACANCIES: Various opportunities exist for permanent and on-call or long-term substitute assignments.

The eligibility list will be used to fill both types of positions based on the immediate and future needs of the District. All positions are part-time, 9.25 months per year, 6 hours per day. Permanent positions are Monday through Friday and include full benefits for the employee only. Both permanent and substitute assignments may be in any part of the district boundaries (Glendale, La Crescenta, or Montrose).

SALARY: Listed salary rates represent the first and last steps of the salary range.

Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the first step only.

Permanent employees may earn higher rates upon successful completion of the probationary period (130 days of paid service) and may receive merit increases each year up to the maximum amount.

Examples of Duties

  • Assists students upon arrival and departure at school and throughout the school day by repositioning in wheelchairs or other necessary appliances.

  • Assists students with washing, feeding, toileting, and other personal care needs.

  • Performs specialized physical health care services such as, suctioning, gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, oxygen administration and care of related equipment, and administers medication as directed.

  • Provides basic emergency care as needed, including cardio pulmonary resuscitation or other life sustaining efforts until medical assistance arrives.

  • Changes sheets and linens and prepares cots and beds for rest periods.

  • Completes written accident or incident reports as needed.

  • Communicates students' needs to the teacher.

  • Cleans and maintains activity rooms, equipment, and utensils.

  • Supervises students in physical and instructional activities providing assistance as directed by

a teacher.

  • Observes and reports on students' progress.

  • Performs a variety of office clerical tasks such as typing and preparing dittos and stencils.

  • Assists in administering, scoring, and maintaining records or tests.

  • Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards

Knowledge of:

Personal needs and behavioral characteristics of students with disabilities.

Special education materials, practices, concepts, and techniques.

Record keeping principles and procedures.

Classroom procedures and rules of conduct.

Basic emergency, first aid, and health care techniques.

Clerical practices and procedures.

Ability to:

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.

Assist students with disabilities with personal care needs and activities.

Assist in physical transfer of students with disabilities (approximately 50 - 75 pounds).

Observe, evaluate, and report on student's progress.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Compile and maintain records and files; operate a variety of office machines.

Minimum Requirements:

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.

License or Certificate:

Incumbents must obtain a valid First Aid and CPR certificate within the designated probationary period for this classification.

Desirable Qualifications:

One year of experience working with handicapped individuals.

Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

A review of applicants' experience and qualifications is conducted periodically. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the District will be invited to participate in the next step of the process.

The examination process will include a performance test and a qualifications appraisal interview. Qualified candidates will be notified of the details at the appropriate time.

Hiring for this position is on as-needed basis and could occur at anytime during a school year. Interested individuals are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible in order to be included in the next group to be reviewed.

Note regarding the salary: Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate. The salary range listed above is for permanent positions only.

Prior to employment, a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis. Also required after an offer of employment are a pre-employment physical exam (district-paid) and fingerprint clearance with the Department of Justice.
