Basic Function: Under general supervision from the appropriate certificated instructional personnel, assist with instructional and non-instructional duties in a program designed to serve students with special educational needs.

Representative Duties: Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions listed below.

Duties may vary from classroom to classroom within the school site. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.

Student Support and Assistance

Tutor students individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow-up on learning activities.

Prepare daily and weekly lesson plans based on students' Individualized Education Plan.

Assist students in locating and using resource materials; assist students with specific accommodations identified in a student's Individualized Education Plan.

Assist in the development of a variety of instructional materials.

Promote positive student behavior and independence through the use of positive reinforcement strategies.

Participate in communications with classroom teachers, parents and resource specialists concerning student needs and progress;

Attend parent conferences or student study team meetings upon request.

Administer minor first aid.

Assist with special projects.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Teacher Support and Assistance

Assist with grading, recording, and distributing student work assignments; check-in homework and papers returned.

Duplicate and maintain files of instructional materials.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Program Support and Assistance

Set-up and maintain files on students referred to the Special Education program; maintain records related to assertive discipline or behavior modification program.

Requisition and maintain supplies and materials for the program; perform clerical assistance as needed including composing letters and memos upon request.

Assist with special projects.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to graduation from high school. Courses in psychology, child growth and development and one year of experience in a paid or volunteer setting working with school age children is desirable.

Skills: Knowledge of appropriate grade level academic areas of instruction; and variety of techniques used in guiding and motivating students with special educational needs. Clerical work including keyboarding and photocopying.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics.

Learning problems of children with special educational needs.

Appropriate grade level academic areas of instruction.

Techniques used in guiding and motivating students with a variety of learning styles and needs.

Record-keeping techniques.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, respect and courtesy.

Basic first aid principles.

Ability to:

Meet District standards of professional attitude as outlined in Board Policy 4219.21 Code of Ethics for Classified Personnel.

Relate to students in individual or small group situations.

Be flexible in a variety of classroom situations.

Perform light clerical work, which may include keyboarding.

Give and receive oral and written instructions in English.

Spell correctly, use proper English, and make simple arithmetic computations.

Learn pertinent procedures and functions quickly and to apply them under general supervision.

Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the general public.

Working Conditions:

Environment: Classroom environment; constant interruptions.

Physical Abilities: Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; adequate vision to read, prepare and proofread documents; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting light objects.
