Job Duties

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is seeking a dedicated and civic-minded individual to join our team of sworn Peace Officers.

Are you excited about delivering the best Security experience to our guests? This position may be the perfect fit for you! Our Special Conservators of the Peace are responsible for assisting in the overall safety and security of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, employees, and its patrons while on duty. This is a crucial role to the Museum and requires following proper safety and security procedures. As our Security Operations is open 24/7, 365 days a year, we expect this role to be flexible in working mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Special Conservators of the Peace (SCOP) ensure that the museum is a safe environment for a variety of art related events and exhibitions by patrolling the museum property and grounds, enforcing rules and regulations, assisting visitors and employees, reporting potential hazards and suspicious activities, and responding to emergency situations. Officers also assist with investigations, secure evidence, and complete logs and other records.

As a Special Conservator of the Peace, officers carry weapons and exercise general police powers as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the responsibilities and professional conduct of sworn, armed Special Conservator of the Peace and the methods used in accident and claims investigations.

  • Ability to handle public safety and security issues as they arise in an appropriate and timely manner.

  • Ability to provide emergency care and assistance to any individual who is hurt, injured, or becomes ill while at the Museum.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgement, prepare complete and effective reports, and communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to sit, stand and patrol the campus for up to twelve (12) hours at a time.

  • Ability to work in a diverse workplace.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.

  • Excellent customer services skills.

  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications.

Additional Considerations

A college degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, private security, or equivalent experience, such as military service.

Special Requirements:

  • Selected candidates must pass a fingerprint criminal history background check.
