SUMMARY: The teacher needs to be capable of creating a program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth while at the same time meeting their social/emotional, and physical needs; motivating students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation and exposure to foreign language education in accordance with each student's ability; establishing good relationships with parents and other staff members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned by immediate supervisor.

  • Abides by the policies of the Board of Education, the terms of the Master Agreement, and directives issued by the school administration within the provisions of the Master Agreement.

  • Completes other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisors in a timely fashion.

  • Knows and appreciates the diversity of a global society.

  • Teaches district approved curriculum.

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional material and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Integrates technology when appropriate.

  • Evaluates pupils' academic growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.

  • Teaches Spanish, including speaking, reading, symbol recognition, writing, and comprehending.

  • Works, in partnership with teachers, to integrate Spanish language, history and culture into other areas of instruction when possible.

  • Facilitates activities and experiences through which pupils will develop cultural understandings and appreciation of Spanish culture.

  • Assists students to develop basic communication skills in Spanish through activities such as songs, skits, and conversations.

  • Facilitates individual and small group activities and experiences in order to meet the developmental levels of all students, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.

  • Utilizes positive classroom management techniques.

  • Utilizes a number of techniques such as portfolio development, video tape recording, photographs, displays, and exhibitions to document for parents, students, the school, and the community the progress of the on-going language class.

  • Communicates with parents and school staff on an on-going basis to solicit and facilitate parent involvement in classroom.

  • Participates in conferences, inservices, and workshops to facilitate on-going professional growth/development.

  • Participates in self-evaluations of teaching results, teaching techniques, practices and procedures, and revises accordingly.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree with valid Michigan Teaching Certificate

  • Spanish teaching experience or equivalency endorsement from Michigan Department of Education

PREFERRED/DESIRED TEACHER CHARACTERISTICS

  • Displays a genuine interest in working with secondary students!

  • Displays the ability to laugh and effect a sense of humor in the classroom with the students.

  • Demonstrated ability in the use and application of a variety of methodological approaches, including process and inquiry strategies, individualized instruction, techniques of group discussion, and effective use of community resources.

  • Evidence of curriculum integration, enrichment and/or compacting and/or acceleration.

  • The ability to ask questions that stimulate, expand and extend content, knowledge (i.e. Bloom's Taxonomy Revised, Torrance, Renzulli, Guilford, Taba, et. al.).

  • Welcomes parent involvement; including direct contacts and written communications.

  • The ability to encourage students to go beyond an assigned topic - and being flexible in allowing students to pursue their own topics.

  • The ability to integrate academic disciplines into an area of study and to provide learning experiences that are related to universal themes, issues, or problems.

  • The ability to continually assess student outcomes and products through developed criterion.

  • Utilizes technology available in the teaching and learning process.

  • Willingness to accept direction from building administrator(s).

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Michigan Teacher Certification with 6-12 Spanish endorsement or equivalent.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedure, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, students, parents and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and present lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, school staff and parents; skills in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to travel to other building is required. The position requires the individual to sometimes meet multiple demands from several people.
