Summary:
This position provides an opportunity for an energetic and highly organized teacher of general music & chorus to teach a variety of middle school choral ensembles and general music classes. General music instruction includes basic guitar, music appreciation, composition and note reading. Chorus includes a 6th grade chorus and a combined 7th/8th grade chorus. Willingness to collaborate with drama teacher on extra-curricular musical/cabaret performances (pays extra-curricular stipends)
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree, Master's degree preferred
Minimum of 5-years' experience in choral conducting (youth)
Ability to handle multitude of varying and complex issues
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to use technology effectively
Desired Qualifications:
Excellent vocal musicianship
Experienced choral conducting (a capella & w/accompaniment)
Proficient piano skills
Proficient guitar skills
Broad knowledge of musical styles, composers, music history
Proficient in Garage Band, Finale, and other music technologies for music instruction
Experience supporting students for MMEA Jr. District Auditions
Willingness to promote and sustain a culture of music in and among the school community including elementary feeder schools
Experience directing and/or music direction for musical theatre productions (extra-curricular stipend provided)
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (Not Limited To):
Work in collaboration with building and citywide music teachers to maintain citywide music curriculum and assessment practices
Prepare choral groups for seasonal concerts at school as well as special performances at Newton City Hall, the MA Statehouse, and other venues when appropriate (day and/or evening performances)
Consistent, reliable and punctual attendance is essential for supervision and instruction of the students
Responsible for implementing "other job related duties" as needed

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or kneel. Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building. The Middle School General Music & Choral Music Teacher will be required to set up chairs and risers for concerts.
Regularly required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
