Primary Function:

Provide Spanish translation and interpreter services for inpatients and outpatients seen at the hospital.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide Spanish interpretation for patients and hospital staff as needed

  • Translate written material into Spanish as requested.

  • Identify barriers to effective communication throughout the hospital for customers whose primary language is not English.

  • Assist in the process of early identification of patients who will need interpreter services.

  • Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.

Additional Duties:

  • Keep and submit monthly statistics on the volume of interpreter cases managed throughout the hospital.

  • Evaluate the need for translation of all hospital forms.

  • Centralize the interpreter service through the Social Work office.

  • Other duties as assigned

Performance Skills:

  • Fluency In Spanish and the ability to pass a proficiency test with a minimum score of 3+ out of a possible 5.

  • Spanish language medical terminology knowledge.

  • Maintain professionalism in interpreter encounters.

  • Provide literal intepretation without bias or alteration of content.

Primary Function: Responsible for communication, information, assistance, education, and support to parents/guardians and family members in Perioperative Services during a child's perioperative and operative course. Essential Functions: * Assesses parents' knowledge and anxiety regarding the surgical procedure and applies this information to communication with the family. * Identifies the family's expectations regarding the surgical procedure, utilizing this information for family education and communicating, when appropriate, information to the surgeon or members of the surgical team. * Provides direct communication to the surgical team and family and facilitates communication between the surgical team and the family with progress reports (as approved by the surgeon or designee) to the family during the surgery. * Provides a support mechanism for the families under the stressful situation of a child's surgery. * Works with the nursing staff to educate and reinforce the perioperative role of the nurse in promoting comprehensive and coordinated health care for the surgical patient and family. * Investigates and develops new resources for education and support to families during the perioperative and operative periods. * Assists with maintaining the Parent Waiting Room and daily maintenance along with appearance of the area, communicating with other departments (i.e. housekeeping) as necessary to accomplish this. * Maintains appropriate documentation in the patient record if appropriate. * Participates in continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities and develops CQI initiatives in this area of responsibility. Provides coverage within Perioperative Services as indicated.
