Spanish Curriculum Developer

Summary Description: WPU is a private, Christian, liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon. WPU has been designated a Hispanic Serving Institution by the federal government, with 32% of undergraduates identifying as Hispanic. The institution has been awarded a 5-year Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions grant by the Department of Education, through which this position will be funded. This role is developmental in nature; upon completion of the grant, it will be absorbed within the faculty ranks and will continue to be funded by the institution using additional revenues that will be generated by increased enrollment and retention.

The Spanish Curriculum Developer will be the primary individual responsible for developing, launching, enrolling, monitoring, and providing and overseeing instruction for a Spanish Bilingual Certification designed to support students in attaining careers as interpreters, translators, and in other fields where bilingual fluency is required or desired. The role is full-time, year-round, and in-person. The Spanish Curriculum Developer will be expected to be present on campus to allow for ongoing collaboration, evaluation, and instruction. This individual will coordinate with other teaching faculty to ensure curriculum and pedagogy is equity-minded and that all faculty participate in project-sponsored professional development.

Primary Job Duties:

• Work with the project team to advance the objectives of the Avanzamos Project

• Research employment opportunities in the region and the country and identify ways to fill needed positions

• Research bilingual/interpretation programs and curriculum to recommend a specific model to achieve project goals

• Develop and assess learning outcomes for a Spanish curriculum

• Oversee development of the program with regard to curriculum committee approval and accreditation

• Ensure compliance with curriculum committee and accreditation regulations

• Partner with community organizations/workplaces to develop internship and practicum opportunities for students

• Determine best practices for testing and certification of program participants

• Collaborate with other divisions (Nursing, Natural Science and Health, etc.) to develop pathways to employment for bilingual students

• Work with the curriculum committee and others to create overlap between translation curriculum and general ed curriculum to allow for timely graduation

• Comply with all federal regulations in accordance with the Department of Education

• Collaborate with Project Director to provide faculty development in culturally responsive pedagogy

• Apply evidence-based practices to improve academic and career student outcomes

• Identify, solicit, document, and respond to the needs of industry partners

• Work with Avanzamos team to foster an authentic climate of belonging that validates Hispanic students, recognizing their cultural wealth and channeling it for students' social mobility

• Teach courses in Spanish, interpretation, and related subjects (for example ethics of interpretation)

• Attend faculty meetings, retreats, and professional development opportunities

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree (or equivalent) in Spanish, linguistics, applied linguistics, or Education with an emphasis on foreign languages

• Bilingual in English and Spanish

• Experience working with Hispanic, first-generation, and other historically underserved undergraduate populations

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with teaching interpretation

• Experience with curriculum development

• Knowledge of the curriculum development, approval, and accreditation processes at private universities

• Knowledge of regional employer needs
