The Space Manager is a key role in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at UVA (A&S), responsible for space planning and management in the A&S facilities portfolio. The position has important responsibilities for project management oversight of construction, renovation, and improvement projects across a range of A&S facilities. The position works as part of a small team of A&S space management staff and reports to the A&S Director of Space Planning & Management.
Responsibilities
Project Management
Represent College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (A&S) interests in supporting the facilities needs of A&S departments and programs
Represent A&S in transactions with UVA Facilities Management, UVA's Office of the Architect, consultants, and contractors
Arrange, manage, and maintain relevant relationships within A&S and across UVA, as well as with consultants and contractors to support A&S facilities needs
Review project proposals and budgets and recommend direction in conjunction with the A&S Director of Space Planning & Management
Analyze and address issues that have the potential to jeopardize project success
Proactively identify needed changes in work scope and ensure appropriate planning measures are taken to assess, renegotiate, and amend projects as required
Manage budgets and expenditures related to facilities maintenance and improvements
Space Management
Work with the A&S Space Management Team, A&S Departments, and FM Geospatial Engineering Group to organize, manage, and track A&S space assignments and use
Plan for and manage A&S space needs for instructional space, research space, and office space
Develop needs assessments, long-range space planning, modeling and data analysis
Support negotiation and implementation of space assignments
Develop and execute phasing plans for relocation based on physical space requirements
General
Maintain effective communication within the A&S Deans Office, with A&S departments, and project team members
Interact with colleagues and consultants in a manner that builds productive relationships
Initiate improvements for processes as related to space planning, facilities and associated business areas
Perform other activities as required
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: At least two years of experience in planning, design and development, architecture, historical preservation/conservation. Master's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
Licensure: Professional registration in architecture or engineering is desirable. Certification as a LEED Accredited Professional may be beneficial.
Preferred Qualifications:
Significant experience related to project management, operations, logistics, construction and facilities management
Strong communication skills, verbal and written, for effectively communicating within all levels of the organization
Strong initiative, self-motivation, flexibility, and interest in achieving creative solutions in all areas of facilities and logistics
Dedication to the organization and to excellence in project delivery and customer service
This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

This is primarily a sedentary job, involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does require frequent travel around the university grounds to visit A&S and other facilities. The job occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
