Performs intermediate skilled work in the operation and maintenance of solids dewatering equipment at the wastewater treatment facility; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager.

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Examples of Duties: Operating and maintaining a sludge dewatering centrifuge and related equipment; assisting in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.

Regulates and adjusts solids dewatering equipment including related pumps, chemical feed equipment, and other equipment to ensure proper functioning and performance;

Ensures that preventive and corrective maintenance tasks are performed in a timely manner to ensure continued reliability of the equipment;

Collects samples and analyzes them to monitor efficiency of operation and chemical dosages;

Cleans, paints, and services pumps, motors, and other equipment as required;

Records data from meters, instruments, lab tests, etc.;

Keeps building and work areas clean and performs some groundskeeping around buildings;

Performs related tasks as required.

General knowledge of the operation and maintenance of solid waste handling system and equipment; some knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment facility; general knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and the necessary safety precautions; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records; skill in the use and care of hand tools; ability to perform some manual labor.

Typical Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in wastewater treatment operations.

Supplemental Information: Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Water Plant Manager. Currently positions are available at the Smith Lake and Lake Mooney Water Treatment Plants. Examples of Duties: Operating a water treatment plant; taking samples; reading gauges and charts; maintaining plant equipment; maintaining records; preparing reports. Oversees proper functioning of water pumps, motors, chlorinators, filters and chemical feeders making adjustments as necessary to maintain proper flow of water; Compiles and maintains reports on water treated for monthly and daily averages; Adds or adjusts addition of chemicals to water as necessary; notes readings of meters and indicators; Collects water samples from designated points, performs basic chemical tests; Makes chlorine feed and treatment adjustments; replenishes treatment equipment with chlorine; Maintains records of chemical usage; greases and packs well equipment as needed; Performs routine equipment and plant monitoring maintenance; performs preventive maintenance on equipment and pumps; May serve as backflow or cross-connection inspector as assigned; Performs daily chemical and physical analyses on raw and finished water; Performs plant start-ups and shut-downs; and Performs related tasks as required. Typical Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and methods used in water treatment operations; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with water plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions; thorough knowledge of chemistry as applied to water treatment; ability to adjust water pumps, chemical feed machines and other water plant equipment; ability to check the operation of equipment and to detect defects in operation; ability to take accurate readings, to keep records and to make arithmetical computations; skill in the use and care of hand tools. Supplemental Information: Must posess a Virginia Class I License or be able to obtain a Class I license within three (3) months of hiring. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment at a water treatment plant including some supervisory experience.
