This is a Solid Waste Technician 5 with our Fleet group. This role requires a CDL-B License.

The primary reporting locations will be:

Compost Central Recycling Center located at 140 Valleydale Rd, Charlotte, NC 28214

Hickory Grove Recycling Center located at 8007 Pence Rd, Charlotte, NC 28215.

The incumbent will be required to work non-typical business hours including some weekends, night shifts, and holidays. The incumbent must possess a Class A CDL and should be familiar with Roll-Off, Tractor-Trailer, and Front End Loader trucks.

Position Summary

Performs responsible and skilled work engaging in solid waste equipment operation, staff oversight,

maintenance and training. This position will serve as a technical lead in equipment operation,

maintenance and staff training in operating complex equipment and specialty site operation where

certification is a requirement. Position requires minimal supervision. Shall lead and instruct safety

procedures for solid waste operations. This position will have customer service interactions and will train

others within the solid waste job series. Position will serve as a Lead Operator of site operations when

supervisory personnel are not available.

Essential Functions

Serves as a Keyholder and may be responsible for opening and closing of solid waste centers

and will have access to tool storage and sensitive areas.

Takes the lead in training, mentoring and performing ride-along reviews of commercial driving

staff and other staff engaged with operating large technically complex equipment.

May perform maintenance on large, complex equipment used in the solid waste program and

diagnose fault codes associated with electronic equipment monitoring devices. Will train and

mentor other Solid Waste Technicians of lessor grades regarding maintenance.

Operates and instructs others to operate, a wide variety of equipment in the processing, collection

and disposal of recyclables, trash, special wastes and compost/mulch. This includes large tubgrinders,

angle-blade bulldozers, front-loaders, compactors and wheel loader vehicles.

Reviews equipment status, prepares necessary paperwork and utilizes MS programs such as

Excel and Word to track equipment, parts, repairs associated with work activities.

May drive semi-tractor trailers hauling materials and heavy equipment (walking floor trailers and

low-boy trailers)

Oversees and assists with equipment and tool inventories.

Load and unloads heavy equipment from trucks and vehicles, using appropriate cranes, forklifts

and other equipment.

Monitor the safety of job sites and co-workers.

Operate solid waste vehicles that require a CDL

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Minimum of seven years of experience.

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: Yes

Licenses and Certifications

Requires County Driving Privileges

Depending on the area of assignment, may require a Class A or B CDL with one or more of the

following endorsements, H(Hazardous Materials), N(Tank Vehicle), P (Passenger Transport), S

(School Bus/Passenger Transport), T (Double/Triples), or X (Tanker and hazardous Materials).

Depending upon the area of assignment, may require a Waste Management Operators Certificate

(Landfill) or Compost Facility Operators Certificate (Mulch Processing) or Transfer Station

Operators Certificate, as required by State regulations and facility permit requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) or certificates from

technical schools or organizations related to heavy equipment operation, solid waste program

emphasis, or workplace safety.

Experience working in the waste management field and be familiar with the nomenclature of

terms, job hazards, and standard limitations of material acceptance

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of

Equipment used in solid waste operations maintenance, and construction

Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of this

equipment

Safe work practices and hazards associated with solid waste work

Lock out Tag out procedures

Customer service methodology, and communication with customers using disposal facilities

Use of the tools, equipment, supplies, and methods used in maintenance activities

Thorough knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations associated with Commercial Vehicles

In-depth knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance

Working knowledge of computers

Working knowledge of OSHA regulations for general industry

Skills

Operating large complex Diesel and hydraulic equipment for the solid waste and construction

industry

Performing work, sometimes in adverse weather conditions

Ability to interpret written plans and permit requirements of solid waste facilities

Ability to train others in lower classes on the safe operation of heavy equipment
