About the Role:

This position is for a Software Test Engineer in the Bioinformatics team who will focus on verifying and validating tools and software used to process patient samples and analyze their genomic profiles, helping to find the right treatment options for cancer patients based on a simple blood draw.

You'll need to have excellent communication and cross-group collaboration skills, be able to make forward progress despite ambiguous circumstances, be a self-starter, a quick learner of new technologies and have experience in software testing.

You will be a critical part of the bioinformatics team and will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact working with a team to lay the foundation for quality automation across multiple products in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in requirements and design review meetings to create comprehensive V&V deliverables leading to successful implementation and timely project completion.

  • Works with development teams to understand and review the technical design to devise effective test strategy and is flexible enough to source out this information even without formal requirements

  • Ensure the requirements and specifications of the system can be verified and validated, by reviewing use cases, regulatory requirements, risk mitigations.

  • Use advanced knowledge of software systems and software testing in identifying, evaluating, and resolving highly complex test problems.

  • Responsible for handling highly complex test environment / data problems and issues.

  • Writes and executes thorough test plans/test protocols, test cases, test scripts and log/follow-up on defects.

  • Design, create, enhance, and maintain detailed automation test cases and conduct hands-on testing, including integration testing.

  • Perform a thorough review of test plans/test protocols, test cases, test scripts, and test scenarios.

  • Works with other functional groups, and stakeholders.

  • Assist with defining and implementing software quality improvement initiatives


  • Must have 2+ Experience with scripting languages such as Python, Shell, Batch, Bash and Linux commands

  • Must have 2+ Experience writing test automation scripts using testing tools like Robot Framework.

  • Must have Experience with Agile tools such as JIRA and test management tools like JAMA or similar

  • Must Have Thorough understanding of SQA process and has 2+ years of experience writing test protocols, test cases, test scenarios.

  • Strong analytical/communication skills, capable of uncovering anomalies in robust software.

  • Strong understanding of test methodologies (such as performance, load, stress, functional, regression, unit, etc.

  • Software testing for complex Medical device systems preferred.

  • Experience working with relational databases preferred.

  • Experience working with Dockers preferred.


Bachelors or Master's in computer science, bioinformatics or related science field


  • Knowledge and experience with Next Generation Sequencing Data.

  • Experience working with Bioinformatics/ data-analysis software.

As part of the Guardant Health Bioinformatics Software Test team, the Bioinformatics Software Test Intern will work closely with the developers to learn, hands-on, how to validate clinical software created by Bioinformatics team to detect cancer using liquid biopsy and support clinical operations. He/She will be responsible for validating these tools and driving the overall quality of these products. At the end of the internship, the intern will have credible experience validating the performance of clinical software in different regulatory environments. Roles and Responsibilities: * Work closely with end users to lead the development of validation protocols. * Work with end users to collect data to support protocol requirements, analyze data collected and create validation reports. * Create and execute unit tests to verify functionality. * Create and execute manual/automated tests. * Troubleshoot, log and resolve software defects. * Contribute to software design reviews and code reviews. * Learn and have fun! Qualifications * Must be a currently enrolled graduating senior in a Masters or PhD program, ideally in Computer Sciences, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Statistics or Engineering * Coding experience in Python * Knowledge of linux/Unix Environments. * Knowledge of postgres and/or MySQL. * Software Development or testing experience preferred. * Ability to work independently, as well as to collaborate with a team to accomplish goals * Strong communications and interpersonal skills.
