In particular, seemingly impossible products that define new categories that advance Facebook's mission of connecting the world. The B8 team will apply DARPA-style breakthrough development at the intersection of ambitious science and product development. It will operate on aggressive, fixed timelines, with extensive use of partnerships in universities, small and large businesses.

The Portal team has the responsibility for producing the best calling experience in the market, including video and audio. We are looking for a Software Engineer to solve multiple real-world implementation issues in optimizing network conversations. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in networking, including congestion avoidance (TCP).

This is a full-time position based in our Menlo Park office.


  • Work closely with calling team to understand features, operation, and specify enhancements to WebRTC framework.

Design, develop, test, and deploy WebRTC framework and applications.

Work with Application and Platform teams to debug functional, performance, and stability issues across the stack.

Participate in design reviews and code reviews for the framework team.

Create documentation that helps the team to scale.


  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of Computer Science, Computer Engineering or similar.

Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Experience in Linux or BSD development, especially with regards to the networking and media (audio/video) stacks.

Network experience, including protocol design and congestion control.

Direct experience working with WebRTC or a comparable media stack.

Experience with networking (protocols, dynamics).

Experience writing maintainable code with test coverage.


  • Knowledge of video and audio codecs.

Experience with android frameworks development.

Experience working in a fast-paced environment.

Communication and interpersonal skills.
