Checkr is looking for Backend Engineers to build out our shared services of which multiple engineering teams are dependent on. Examples of shared services are integrations for different communications (email, SMS, etc), full-text search on candidate information, maintaining webhooks such as an infrastructure service. The main goal for this position is around reliability: our background checks impact millions of people in real life and therefore the output of our engine has to be robust. Behind the scenes, we embrace micro-services as the best way to isolate everything and selecting the right tool for the job. We also love asynchronous architectures and building RESTful APIs. Checkr was founded by engineers for engineers; we want to create the best environment for developers to build, learn and love their work.

What a typical week may look like at Checkr:

  • Building new features and testing them

  • Collaborate with peers to brainstorm new product ideas from design, implementation to release

  • Talking to your team and deciding how an API method should work and look like

  • Whiteboarding to fix scaling issues and then implementing it

  • Contribute to internal tooling to help improve our workflow, increase efficiency and make everyone's lives more simplistic

  • Help identify, triage and solve bugs

What we value in a Backend Engineer:

  • You have curiosity in figuring out how to deliver clean, robust and scalable code

  • You have experience with at least one of the following -- micro-services, API design, infrastructure services (Kafka, ElasticSearch, etc), or open source software

  • You understand how to build out reliable distributed systems and can deeply discuss tradeoffs

  • Experience with queueing architectures

  • You are a strong communicator and can bridge concepts to PMs and other engineers

Brownie Points:

  • Proficiency in Ruby or Python

  • Academic background in computer science or equivalent (BSc or MSc)

  • Experience with microservices

Ideal candidate will have deep technical knowledge, broad analytical skills, experience designing distributed systems that are scalable, reliable and resilient while creating unified developmental standards that can be leveraged by other teams. What you get to do every day * As a Sr. Staff or Principal Software Engineer in the team, you will be a key technical player across all areas of the engineering lifecycle, including gathering requirements from stakeholders, defining experiences in partnership with UX designers and Product Owners and building services required to power those experiences. * You will be working across org boundaries to integrate services and workflows, releasing with quality and observability measures included in the delivery of pipelines. * You will engage with the broader Zendesk Site Reliability organization and develop a strategy around diagnostics, reporting, alerting, auditing, and APM to better monitor our services in production both to raise awareness of emerging issues as well as provide valuable and targeted forensic data that can be used during remediation actions. * You will collaborate with downstream teams to identify gaps in test and tools coverage; design and build new frameworks and service layers to increase test system effectiveness; and to improve our production testing infrastructure to increase deployment confidence. * You will partner with Zendesk architects to stay abreast of issues affecting the Zendesk platform and bring back the best practices from Zendesk engineering to the team. * You will advocate and define the standards for integrating (or building) new libraries, tools, and services to help us create and maintain reliable services at scale. * You feel passionate about quality and act as a supportive participator in code reviews and design brainstorming sessions * You will periodically perform an analysis of our code (and our tech debt backlog) looking for security, performance and business scale challenges and partner with engineering and product teams to prioritize the work necessary to address concerns into roadmap.
