Responsibilities

What you'll do and learn:

  • Work on a remote cross-functional team where you'll play a critical role in design, planning, development and deployment.

  • Develop high performance, highly scalable web applications. Our web app is used by over 20 million educators, students and parents worldwide.

  • Meet aggressive deadlines in a rapid application development environment.

  • Learn new technologies: AWS is releasing new tools every day, there are new open source libraries to vet and you will be a party to helping us vet and pick the best tool for the job.

  • Bottom line: you'll have a say in what's built - we're not throwing specs over the wall for you to develop on an island.

Qualifications

What we'd like:

Schoology is looking for a software engineer who is ready for the next step in their career. Here you will find the guidance to grow into that next level of autonomy and effectiveness. Our team is passionate about delivering software that makes an impact in education today.

  • Experience developing in at least 2 server side languages (PHP, Java, node.js, )

  • Experience developing in at least 1 client side JS framework (ReactJS, Angular, )

  • Understanding of basic web skills (HTML, CSS and JavaScript)

  • Experience with datastores, either SQL or NoSQL, and the ability to talk deeply about at least one.

  • Experience working with other people's code, how to dig into it and make tactical changes with minimal side effects.

  • A commitment to learning about anything you don't know on your own and with supervision.

  • Superior communications and organization skills - you're going to be working on a team, so this is essential.

  • A belief that delivering code to production is just one step in the process. Monitoring and owning the code you wrote goes hand in hand with construction.

  • A desire to take on whatever challenge is most important. This could be tackling something you are familiar with, or it could require a deep dive into a whole new world. The key is having the right attitude.

  • Experience and/or willingness to work remotely.

The Software Engineer for the Content and Data team is responsible to provide expertise with the design, development, testing, deployment, maintenance and operation of software to meet the business requirements and support internal and external clients achieve their performance objectives. You will help us by: * Contributing to team efforts to develop new systems, upgrades and updates to existing systems inclusive of requirements analysis, system design, implementation, testing and deployment. Executing project work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing business needs and/or requirements. * Analyzing large, complex systems to determine performance bottlenecks, missing functionality, application bugs and capturing requirements in stories to improve overall efficiencies. * Promoting a collaborative environment and adhering to established code system protocols, procedures and best practices to ensure the quality and integrity of code passes white board design review sessions. * Facilitating activities that ensure the successful utilization of systems including developing documentation and test scripts. * Keeping up to date on relevant / upcoming technologies and methodologies towards continuous improvement of software design and procedures. You will be a great fit if you have the following: * Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science / Programming * Minimum 2 years of experience in software development, commercial software and methodologies is required. Broad exposure working on a variety of platforms * Strong aptitude to write well designed, testable and efficient code. * In-depth knowledge and expertise in software development, project management, software systems development working on a variety of platforms. * In-depth understanding of modern software architecture and methodologies, including Agile (Scrum, XP) & incremental methods. * Experience with QA & Testing, including modern unit and TDD driven methods; experience with automated testing and Continuous Integration. * Some experience with software architecture and database management * Working knowledge of Agile methodology, tools and techniques * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in object oriented analysis and design with the ability to identify, propose and implement changes and improvements You will be a great fit if you also have: * Experience with Java, search technologies, SOA, big data systems and distributed computing * Knowledge of React, Python, Groovy/Grails, ElasticSearch and MySql * Experience working within a dynamic, high volume / data environment.
