Position Summary

As a Software Engineering Manager, your primary mission will be to manage the planning, execution, and delivery of user interface development for one or more product lines at ALLDATA. The role will require management of geographically distributed teams and vendors. Ample prior experience in a fast-paced agile environment will be critical to guiding and overseeing our software development activities. In addition, experience managing work against competing priorities and actively identifying blocking issues for quick resolution to increase the team's overall velocity is essential. We are a team-oriented organization looking for an individual who can partner with product owners, UI/UX designers, BSAs, developers, and QA to ensure our projects are released on time, meeting requirements for workflow, performance, quality, and functionality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a development team, building and supporting both browser-based products and mobile app products produced by ALLDATA

  • Oversee all development-related activities of your team on a daily basis and be responsible for execution and final delivery of the product

  • Report project status and issues to Director level technology team management on regular intervals, escalating critical issues as appropriate

  • Contribute in a "working manager" role as an integral part of the scrum team to deliver according to the road map, always leading by example

  • Ensure that the team uses current standards throughout the life cycle of the project by conducting regular training and reviews

  • Establish or continue to apply best practices in change management, source control, dependency mapping

  • Participate in periodic project management process reviews. Conduct regular code reviews in conjunction with the other Software Engineering Managers

  • Strive to be an attentive teacher, coach, and mentor to developers, working to help each team member realize his or her potential

Basic Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering

  • M.S. degree in Engineering (preferred but not required)

  • 7+ years of experience in software development of user interfaces

  • 3+ years of experience managing user interface development teams

  • Proven track record of building and deploying commercial software and apps

Mandatory Technical Qualifications

  • Required technology background:

  • Experience architecting single page applications

  • Expert level fluency in Angular, JavaScript, TypeScript, Node

  • Android, iOS, Windows 10 app development (one or more of these)

  • Java, Objective-C, C# - a specialist in one (if not experienced in all)

  • Agile practices such as (unit testing, TDD, CI)

  • REST services design and development (server and client)

  • Git, SVN, and related tools for source code management and review

  • Unit testing, debugging, application profiling, monitoring, logging

  • Expert with Visual Studio, Android Studio, Xcode (at least one of these)

  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills

  • Software development lifecycle background:

  • Creating new products from scratch

  • Maintaining and improving existing products

  • Integrating components developed by separate teams

  • Rewriting existing products with new and improved approach

  • Updating production software through a release management policy

  • Migrating users from legacy products to new products, retiring products

Other Valued Technical Qualifications

  • Xamarin

  • Vue, Ember, React, Dojo

  • Java, Spring, Maven, Tomcat

  • Mongo, Oracle, MySQL, SOLR

  • Published mobile apps in any of: Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft app stores

  • Experience with CI tools: Jenkins, Artifactory, NPM

  • Experience with collaboration tools like: JIRA, Confluence, LucidCharts

  • Experience with security infrastructure: OAuth2.0, OpenID, IdPs

  • Experience with automotive diagnostics: OBDII, DTCs, PIDs, J1979, J2534

  • Experience working with or developing repair shop management software

  • Experience working with or developing automotive diagnostic scan tools

  • Experience working with complex systems comprised of multiple third-party applications or open source components

  • Experience managing software development efforts using agile methodology (scrum, XP, lean software development)

  • Strong in leadership, motivation, negotiation, mediation, contracts, and interpersonal skills, working across functional lines
