STR Woburn , MA 01801

Posted 2 weeks ago

To fight more effectively, military services must increase interoperability among legacy and emerging systems capabilities. STRs team implements a novel software-based solution to this problem, enabling ad-hoc subsystem connectivity through message level translations. We support numerous opportunities to apply this capability across the DoD on various platforms, at military exercises and for mission demonstrations.

The Role:
The project requires a hands-on Software Engineering Lead who holds a Secret clearance to directly support warfighter integration activities. The Lead coordinates with users, government sponsors, partner organizations and directs a small internal (approximately four-person) team. This position offers the opportunity for technical leadership, project planning, design analysis, software development, software testing, end user training, sustainment and fielding of capabilities in support of emerging JADC2 and system requirements. Tasks span the full lifecycle of requirements development, software design, software development, unit and integration testing, documentation and deployment of mature software that will be used across multiple organizations.

This role is a blend of onsite and remote-optional work. A willingness to travel and/or reasonable commute is necessary for onsite work interacting with government customers for requirements development, integration and testing at locations such as Washington, DC and Fort Walton Beach, FL. Software development can be done from an STR site or your home location. The specific schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.

Specific activities will include:

  • Become expert on existing integration toolchain functionality to enable creation of new System of Systems software capabilities
  • Suggest toolchain enhancements for increased functionality and usability; work with partners to implement and test such enhancements including input to documentation and training materials
  • Partner with users and subject matter experts to understand implied and explicit requirements for system interoperability and System of System performance
  • Design and develop software workflows of capabilities through a combination of reverse engineering, leveraging existing software, and new software development
  • Create and execute integration and test plans; write integration and test summary reports
  • Work with the customer and across the software team to troubleshoot issues
  • Support deployed capabilities

Requirements:
The Software Engineering Lead writes software with an eye toward architectural alignment of capabilities and follows good coding hygiene by performing design and code reviews. The Software Engineering Lead is responsible for delivering modular and extensible interface capabilities that are used in experiments, demonstrations and operational systems. The role requires the Software Engineering Lead to interpret and understand end user requirements as they relate to the capabilities we deliver. This position is within the System Development Division, which works across space, airborne, and undersea sensor systems and the C2 capabilities that enable them. Consistent with our mission, the role requires strong collaboration skills and a focus on positively impacting the warfighter.

Who You Are:

  • BS in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent experience
  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret Security clearance
  • Experience with testing and integration of complex software systems, including associated documentation
  • Experience with software scripting and build automation tools (e.g. bash, make), using virtualization to deploy containerized solutions (VMware, docker) on Windows and Linux (CentOS, RHEL)
  • Demonstrated expertise in C90, Java, Python, bash and/or C++
  • Experience with SCM/CI/CD tools (e.g. git/Gitlab)
  • Comfortable updating and adding to a shared codebase within explicit and implicit architecture, coding philosophy and style guides
  • Experience with Agile lifecycle methodologies and tools and/or a DevSecOps environment
  • A demonstrated ability to quickly adopt new languages, libraries, and technologies
  • Willing to travel 10-25% to support on site integration activities

Even Better:

  • Previous experience with user-facing capability development in a relevant technical domain
  • Demonstrated expertise in integration of capabilities spanning disparate development platforms and languages
  • Experience with electronic warfare technologies
  • Experience deploying software on DoD program-of-record systems
  • Prior participation in an open source community
  • Active Security Clearance
  • Located near Washington, DC or Fort Walton Beach, FL areas
