Job Summary

Collaborate with a team of researchers and students working on the development and/or maintenance of web-based software systems and Apps that teach K-12 mathematics students through tutorials and games, and support teachers through assessment tools. Participate in research projects that investigate how students learn best with these technologies by designing, programming, and installing software solutions designed, and specified by the principal investigators.

Essential Functions

  • Create and maintain tutoring and educational software systems and interactive learning environments that serve federally funded grant projects.

  • Maintain web-based software systems through the entirety of their life cycle, updating data as it is discovered and submitted by the content-development team.

  • Investigate system problem areas and generate creative solutions by creating and analyzing flowcharts, layouts, diagrams and charts and by using state-of-the-art technologies.

  • Prepare and install solutions that follow system specifications, standards and programming.

  • Determine operational feasibility by evaluating the team's suggestions regarding system requirements, problem definition, solution development, and proposed solutions.

  • Protect operations by maintaining confidentiality and protecting the privacy of individual data.

  • Collaborate with team members and confer with system users to determine and study information needs, system flow, data usage, and work process.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field with at least four (4) years of working experience in the areas of systems programming and networking, including supervisory experience leading a team of programmers.

OR

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field with at least two (2) years of working experience in the areas of systems programming and networking, including supervisory experience leading a team of programmers.

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience. One (1) year of relevant experience may be substituted for every one (1) year of required academia.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent software engineering and programming skills in Java.

  • Experience with Windows, OSX, and Linux Systems.

  • Experience with SQL and working with a DMBS for data modeling and persistence (MySQL).

  • Experience building user interfaces (GUIs), rich web-based applications, and systems integration.

  • Experience working with clients to produce applications requirements and specifications.

  • Capacity for dialogue towards understanding the needs of users, faculty, and grant project needs.

  • Ability to participate in and present at weekly meetings.

  • Experience with networking and web applications development.

  • Experience working with clients to produce applications requirements and specifications.

  • Comfortable programming in at least half of the following languages and concepts:

  • Java

  • Ruby on Rails

  • JavaScript

  • Python

  • Django

  • Amazon Web Services Management

  • HTML5 and front-end development

  • MySQL or PostGre databases

  • Action script

  • CSS

  • Apache

  • Tomcat

  • GIT or CVS

  • Strong interpersonal and cooperative skills; ability to work with people of varying backgrounds.

  • Ability to work both independently and to be part of an effective team with a highly cooperative and collaborative work style. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively, and create and maintain harmonious relationships with a diverse population of staff, faculty, students, and off-campus constituents.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to read, understand, apply, and explain rules, regulations, and policies/procedures related to duties. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and create effective and efficient work processes.

  • The ability to think through problems, organize and seek out information, identify key factors and underlying causes, and generate solutions or resolve discrepancies.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
