Code in Place, https://codeinplace.stanford.edu/, a global education initiative of Stanford Computer Science, https://www.cs.stanford.edu/ seeks a creative, experienced, and mission-driven Software Developer to join the team bringing free programming education to tens of thousands of learners around the world. At its heart, Code in Place is a growing and vibrant global community of learners, volunteer teachers, faculty, and staff committed to igniting curiosity and interest for building basic programming skills, while at the same time experimenting with how to scale and improve the quality of computer science education through the use of machine learning and innovative, data-driven teaching approaches. By joining the Code in Place effort, you are working to help create a future where accessible, quality computer science education can be made available to all.

But what does that mean? In any given week you might:

  • Design and implement solutions to deliver a mentor matching system for dynamic office hours sessions for learners around the world

  • Build and test algorithms for delivering personalized training content to help our volunteer teachers gain experience and improve the quality of their teaching

  • Integrate software components and third-party tools to leverage video conferencing technologies to support multiple use cases in the Code in Place learning experience

  • Create technical documentation for reference and mentor team members to ensure their contributions meet technical standards and incorporate smoothly into the code base

Reporting to Assistant Professor Chris Piech, this role interacts with a variety of stakeholders including faculty, technical team members, and other Stanford professional staff. A successful Software Developer on our team is someone who enjoys having a variety of projects in motion at the same time, appreciates the beauty of producing clean, efficient code to spec, takes initiative in taking on tasks, and is committed to working inclusively with people across cultures. Given the global nature of this project, this role may be asked to occasionally work early mornings, evenings and/or weekends. This is a 2 year fixed-term position, with the possibility of renewal based on programmatic need and availability of funding.

In this role, you will:

Execute all programming tasks, including programming, analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, modifying, and maintaining computer programs. Work on systems of moderate size and complexity or segments of larger systems. Your core duties include:

  • Conceptualize design, implement, and develop solutions for complex system/programs independently.

  • Work with a variety of users to gain information, and develop intra-system tradeoffs between different users, as necessary; interact with a diverse client base and outside vendor contacts.

  • Document system builds and application configurations; maintain and update documentation as needed.

  • Provide technical analysis, design, development, conversion, and implementation work.

  • Work as a project leader, as needed, for projects of moderate complexity.

  • Serve as a technical resource for applications.

  • Compare, evaluate, and implement new features and technologies, and integrate them into the computing environment.

  • Follow team software development methodology.

  • Mentor lower level software developers.

Education & Experience (Required):

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required):

  • Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.

  • Proficiency with application design and data modeling.

  • Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.

  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.

  • Ability to lead activities on structured team development projects.

  • Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.

  • Knowledge of application domain.

Working Conditions:

  • May work extended hours, evening and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.

  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.

  • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand.

  • Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

Pay Range:

The expected pay range for this position is $102,000 to $161,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
