PURPOSE

The Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science is building a coastal ocean observation software system. The project scope includes the design and implementation of a new Cloud-native system consisting of back-end microservices, a modern user interface, the implementation and integration of automated data QA/QC tools, and the migration of environmental data from an existing system to the new system. The project consists of a software development team and a data automation team.

The Software Application Developer III (Back End) (SAD III), under direction of the software development lead, serves as a team member for development of a Cloud native application. The SAD III (Back- End) works with the development Scrum team on the implementation of the system. This position focuses on implementing back-end services, service integrations, and migration of the data from the legacy system to the new system.

DESCRIPTION

Software Development: 85%

  • Participates in daily stand-up and other Scrum activities.

  • Assists the software development team lead with breaking down work items into tasks.

  • Makes recommendations based on the evaluation of software products and programming languages for their applicability to the system or project.

  • Coordinates the integration of multiple code designs, features, and services to ensure compatibility, reliability, and scalability.

  • Contributes to the design and implementation of the system and database with other team members.

  • Implements back-end services such as API, data ingestion services, data processing services.

  • Integrates data QA/QC tools produced by data automation team into the system.

  • Responds to any bugs that arise.

  • Collaborates with other team members on brainstorming, implementation, code reviews.

Communication and Collaboration: 10%

  • Effectively communicates with colleagues to understand project requirements, timelines, and expectations.

  • Provides regular updates on project progress and seek feedback to improve deliverables.

  • Maintains open and clear communication channels, ensuring prompt responses to inquiries and requests.

Other: 5%

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.

  • Five (5) years of software development experience.

  • Additional education/experience may be used as a substitute for the minimum requirements:

  • Associate degree in related field and seven (7) years of software development experience, OR

  • Master's degree and three (3) years of software development experience.

  • Experience with implementing back-end API services.

  • Experience with relational database such as PostgreSQL.

  • Experience working in a software development team environment.

  • Experience working with any public Cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud).

  • Experience with optimization and producing performant back-end code.

  • Proven experience with implementing performant and scalable back-end services.

  • Experience with project management tool such as Jira, AzureDevOps.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated curiosity to learn new technologies and programming languages.

  • Knowledge and experience in networking and security.

  • Experience with source version control (Git) in a team environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with large-scale software system design.

  • Experience with relational database design.

  • Experience working with time series data.

  • Experience writing tools using scripting languages such as Python, Bash.

  • Experience working with services on Microsoft Azure.

  • Experience with Docker.

  • Experience working with Kubernetes.

  • Experience with building CI/CD pipeline.

  • Experience with ETL processes.

  • Experience working in a Scrum team.

SALARY: $7,083.34 - $8,333.34 Monthly ($85,000 - $100,000 Annually, Approximately)
