The primary work of this position is providing instruction for students in assigned classes in Sociology.   Instructors conduct necessary research to plan, develop, implement, deliver and evaluate assigned instructional courses/programs; evaluate student performance; and serve as academic advisor to students as defined by college guidelines on a part-time basis.

Instructors are also responsible for maintaining records and submitting reports in a timely manner. The work is performed under the supervision of the Dean of Arts and Sciences.  Some evening work may be required.This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive.

  •  Teaching students in the subject area of Sociology that may include seated, online, or hybrid format.

  • Submitting required reports and maintaining accurate student records

  • Developing and managing course syllabi and ensuring that the syllabus meets department and college requirements.

  • Planning and creating lectures, in-class discussions, and assignments.

  • Grading assigned papers, quizzes, and exams.

  • Assessing grades for students based on participation, performance in class, assignments, and examinations.

  • Reporting student learning outcomes, class reviews, and analyzing student data.

  • Collaborating with colleagues on course curriculum.

  • Advising students on how to be successful to achieve goals.

  • Staying updated on innovations and changes within their course load.

  • Acquire computer/technology competencies as appropriate to the position.

  • Maintain security of personal computer access.

  • Perform other professional or job-related duties as assigned.

  • Serve on college committees as directed by supervisor.

Education/Skills

Required:  Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in Sociology or a Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with at least 18 graduate semester hours in a qualifying field. Good communication skills.

Preferred: Master's degree in Sociology. Bilingual.

Experience

Preferred: Some teaching experience at the community college level. Some experience with instructional delivery via distance learning.

 The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.  The employee must regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to focus.  May require travel.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
