Paraprofessional / Behavior Support (Job ID 1015)

Partnership Learning Academy, Plymouth CT

Reports to the Principal

Full Time / Academic Calendar (185 days)

Anticipated start date July 1, 2024

Position Overview: The Special Education Paraprofessional will work collaboratively with certified special education teachers to support the academic, behavioral, and social development of students in grades K-5. The individual will provide one-on-one and small group instruction, implement specialized teaching strategies, and assist in the creation and adaptation of educational materials to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.

Major Responsibilities & Requirements:

  • Assist in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavior intervention plans (BIPs) under the guidance of certified special education teachers.

  • Provide one-on-one and small group instruction in academic subjects, including reading, math, and writing, using specialized teaching strategies and techniques.

  • Support students in developing independent learning skills and self-management strategies.

  • Assist in maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning.

  • Implement behavior management strategies and techniques to support students with behavioral challenges.

  • Monitor student behavior and provide feedback to the teacher regarding student progress and needs.

  • Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, and other school staff to support the overall development and progress of students.

  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and concerns.

  • Participate in team meetings, IEP meetings, and professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.

  • Assist in the preparation and adaptation of educational materials and resources to meet the individual learning needs of students

  • Utilize assistive technology and adaptive equipment to facilitate student learning and participation in classroom activities.

  • Provide personal care and support to students with physical disabilities or medical needs, as required.

  • Assist student with mobility, positioning, and other daily living activities to promote independence and inclusion.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must have taken and passed the ParaPro test or have 2 years post secondary education (minimum 48 credits) or Associates Degree or higher

  • Preference will be given to candidates pursuing or interested in becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)

  • Consistent attendance is an essential function of this position

  • Previous experience working with children or individuals with disabilities preferred.

  • Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and adapt to changing priorities and responsibilities.

  • Excellent professionalism and communication skills

  • Ability to withstand the physical demands of frequent standing, bending, kneeling and therapeutic holding as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, move, and position students with physical disabilities or mobility challenges.

  • Ability to assist with personal care tasks, including toileting, feeding, and dressing, as required.
