Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Education.Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.Licensure.Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to http://vaww.va.gov/OHRM/T38Hybrid/. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English.May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Senior Social Worker, GS-12:
(1) Experience/Education. The candidate must have at least two years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of social work practice of which, one year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.Senior social workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior social workers are experts in their specialized area of practice. Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty. (2) Licensure/Certification.Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure. (3) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management. (b) Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. (c) Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes. (d) Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills. (e) Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area.References: VA Handbook 5005/120 Part II Appendix G39 GS-0185 Social Worker Qualification Standards The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-12. Physical Requirements:The physical demands of this position involve primarily walking, talking, driving, use of the telephone, etc. Strenuous physical activity is not required although the incumbent is expected to withstand pressure and stress as part of their day-to-day activities. Work environment:The incumbent observes normal safety precautions while working primarily in a community setting. The environment also includes home visits, visits to community agencies, visits to care giving facilities in the community etc., depending on the incumbent's specific assignment. Most of the time the incumbent operates in an environment that is well lighted, clean, and does not pose a hazard to personal safety.The Incumbent is expected to maintain a valid driver's license and clearance to drive a government owned vehicle in accordance with VA Policy. There is ongoing exposure to individuals having psychiatric and physical illness and disabilities. These include infections, violent or aggressive behavior, and chronic psychiatric and medical problems. Light lifting, under 15 pounds, light carrying, under 15 pounds, hearing (aid permitted).

We are a community of caregivers delivering every day on our Mission to provide compassionate care that is accessible for all - especially those who are poor and vulnerable. In this position you will: * Review screening tools and identifies patients and their families in need of social work services. Conducts pre-assessment and triages referrals among social work team. * Complete a psychosocial assessment to determine patient and family strengths and needs relative to living and coping optimally with diagnosis, treatment, follow up care and survivorship. Includes gathering data about: (a) patient and family psychosocial strengths and coping skills (b) support systems / care giving needs; (c) ethnic, spiritual and cultural influences (d) functional status; (e) housing, financial, insurance, legal and transportation systems. * Provide therapeutic interventions designed to address current and future problems as the patient's medical and psychosocial needs evolve. Includes (a) Advocacy, direct assistance and coordination of care giving, housing, financial, insurance, legal and transportation resources; (b) emotionally supportive counseling that is brief and solution focused; (c) provision of pre-admission, transfer and discharge consultation; (d) provision of information and referral to Providence, community and other resources and programs; and (e) case management services. * Develop a case plan with patient and the family based upon mutually agreed upon goals to enhance, maintain and promote optimal psychosocial functioning throughout the patient's continuum of care. Participates in multidisciplinary care planning with patient's health care and the patient and their family. Communicates psychosocial progress to physicians and other multidisciplinary team members. Works in coordination with both inpatient Care Management team and outpatient services to coordinate care. * Organize and facilitate support groups, educational forums, and survivorship projects as needed. * Provide consultation to clinical staff on the psychosocial aspects of patients and their family member's distress, care needs, and the services and resources to aid in obtaining optimal support throughout the continuum of care. * Provide assessment, crisis intervention, and brief solution-focused support to Cancer Center Departments when staff are experiencing professional care giving distress, with referrals to appropriate and community resources. * Develop one's knowledge of cancer, its treatments and current trends. Maintains knowledge of community resources and governmental programs available from local and national health and welfare agencies, including expertise in accessing these for patients and families. Develops expertise in providing brief solution focused counseling. Obtains 18 Continuing education credits related to enhance skills as an Oncology Social Worker. Of the 18 credits, 3 credits must be in ethics. Clinician is responsible for documentation their continuing education credits and submitting documentation at the time of their annual performance evaluation. * Attend and participate in Social Work team meetings, Complex Care Consultation meetings, rounds and any other Providence scheduled meetings. * Participate in orienting, teaching and supervising of students and interns to build capacity in Oncology Social Work. * Practice professional decorum and clinical services in accordance with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics. Required qualification for this position include: * Master's Degree in Social Work from an accredited School of Social Work * Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in the State of Alaska within 6 months of hire.
