The Senior Social Worker for the Emergency Department will practice social work in a specialty treatment program within Hospital Operations and the Emergency Department. The selectee is assigned for both administrative and clinical responsibility in the Emergency Department.

The Senior Social Worker selected for this position will need to have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, especially in crisis intervention and working with an interdisciplinary team. They will be using short-term, solution focused counseling with individuals and families who may be in crisis. As well as providing education and referral for resources and benefits, case management, and post-intervention follow-up.
The advanced practice social worker can be further differentiated from the independent practice social worker by incumbent ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, provide consultation and guidance to colleagues, role model effective social work practice skills, teach or provide orientation to less experienced social workers, develop innovations in practice interventions, and provide clinical supervision for social work licensure or certification.
Some of the duties include, but are not limited to:
The incumbent independently provides a full range of assessment and evaluation services appropriate to the Emergency Room setting, especially in emotional and behavioral problems.
The incumbent works as part of an interdisciplinary team in the Emergency Department, with the Psychiatrist on Duty (POD) and the medical treatment team to expedite voluntary and involuntary admissions of patients under the Baker Act system and coordinate efficient community referrals discharges.
The incumbent participates in the assessment of patients in need of detox and substance abuse admissions and treatment.
The incumbent provides psychosocial treatment to various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diversified backgrounds.
The incumbent independently assesses the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members. Formulates and implements a treatment plan, identifying the patient's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance needed, in collaboration with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary treatment team.
The incumbent works with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues to include patient's decision-making capacity regarding health care; Develops person-centered, culturally sensitive treatment plans to address the mental health needs of patients.

Work Schedule: The shifts are primarily 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM or 11:30 AM - 8:00 PM. Hours and days may be rotated, extended, or changed to meet the needs of our Veterans and this Medical Center. Rotation may include weekend days.

Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of social work schools that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website (http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation) to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work.
Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series at the VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Once licensed or certified, social workers must maintain a full, valid, and unrestricted independent license or certification to remain qualified for employment. Loss of licensure or certification will result in removal from the GS-0185 social worker series and may result in employment termination.
English Language Proficiency: Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Applicants can qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (this is only applicable to current VHA employees in this occupation).

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below:
(a) Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management.
(b) Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice.
(c) Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes.
(d) Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills.
(e) Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12.
