This position requires the incumbent to assist students, peers, and subordinates in understanding the relevance of, and promotes the development of positive social skills among students through modeling appropriate behavior, positive intervention, and positively intervening and teaching appropriate employability skills for workplace success.
The incumbent of this position has the responsibility for providing leadership, guidance, and practical counseling to students in a group living environment.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.
Gives practical advice and counsel to students and proposes solutions to routine problems. Serves as an assistant to the Dormitory Manager, providing on-site supervision of students to ensure a safe, healthy atmosphere.
Maintains order and discipline among students. Provides leadership, guidance, and direction to students in performing daily housekeeping duties, work details, physical training, recreation, hygiene, etc. Schedules, coordinates and supervises work details, recreational and other group activities.
Follows supervisor's instruction on assignments, deadlines and priorities. Uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently.

This position requires the selectee to possess a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and therefore, is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Department of Transportation (DOT)/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program. Applicant tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use unless they currently occupy a TDP under the DOT/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program.
Final appointment is conditional on a negative drug test. This announcement constitutes 30 days advance notice.
This position is required to work swing shift and night shift when determined by the needs of the Center.
Must be able to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within 90 days of appointment date as a condition of employment.

For the GS-5 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level.
Examples of specialized experience are: Group leader in community or residential recreation program; instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew; and/or unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group or a boarding school or other residential facility;
OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) that (a) included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the position; (b) included a major in social behavior, human behavior, or health care or; (c) was supplemented by specialized experience as described below;
OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience.
The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
