The International Mission Board, a nonprofit religious organization in Richmond, VA, is hiring for a Social Media Strategist!

Hours: Full time, Richmond, VA

Rate: $57,200/year minimum + great benefits!


  • In conjunction with communication and marketing leadership, designs, creates and manages social media campaigns which reinforce IMB messaging. Collaborates with Web content coordinator, writers, designers, editors, photographers, and video producers to create social media content.

  • Monitor social media channels, engaging users or notifying leadership when appropriate. Ensures content posted by IMB, or about IMB, is secure and appropriate. Assists in monitoring PR/CAT issues, as assigned.

  • Serves as the in-house expert on social media for communication outcomes. Strategizes the best use of IMB social media platforms and opportunities to expand IMB's reach to its audiences. Educates IMB staff about how to use social media platforms. Maintains awareness of best practices, new opportunities, and changes in social media.

  • Travels nationally and internationally, as needed, for social media campaigns and related communication outputs/outcomes.


  • 3-5 years' experience in a related field

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field

  • Understands the Southern Baptist Convention constituency. Understands IMB's task and purpose in the SBC. Understands the collaboration necessary within the SBC, and internally among IMB teams, to accomplish IMB mission objectives.

  • Formally trained professional with degree and proficiency in communications or marketing (portfolio required).

  • Experience maintaining social media channels for a sizeable organization or company.

  • Advanced proficiency in social media platforms utilized by IMB (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Proficiency in WordPress.

  • Works quickly and efficiently to produce quality material under daily deadline pressure.

  • Understands security parameters for content produced/published by IMB.

  • Cognizant of reputation management trusts and follows senior leadership's direction on specific topics or issues.

  • Ability to travel as needed, both stateside and internationally, as assigned.

VIEW JOBS 8/16/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-11-14T00:00 The Lead Content Strategist / Writer will create strategies, messaging, content and tools to produce and enhance original content that promotes the School of Medicine (SOM) and Department websites and its national prominence goals. This may include writing and developing feature stories, academic and research subject matter, and other copy that is/are relevant across multiple channels including print, electronic (email and web), social and video. The ideal candidate will be able to alter content to make it appropriate for secondary mediums. The ideal candidate has a strong background in content strategy, including information architecture, site audits, and SEO basics; has good web writing savvy, and knows enough about design and technology to plan and guide great user experiences. This position will be an advocate for the user as well as the SOM, with proven experience in planning and creating websites that people value and use. This role is vital to the user experience because the Lead Content Strategist / Writer will consult with subject-matter experts, facilitate UX research, and work with development and design colleagues to advocate for the user's ability to find information easily and quickly act on it. Experience explaining and defending your strategy to cross-functional team members is crucial. * Responsible for creation, delivery and measurement of web content communications, including social media, electronic newsletters, campaign updates and impact reports, SOM announcements and more. * Build strong, collaborative, mutually beneficial relationships with Departments, faculty and staff and across SOM leadership. * Lead content team in comprehensive, innovative thinking to strategically create, develop, approve, and disseminate compelling stories that share the School of Medicine's vision and excellence with the world. * Assist in the development and execution of content management strategy that supports and extends the SOM's strategic initiatives, brand awareness and reputation. * Coordinate with writers, editors, and content strategists, ensuring consistency in brand, strategic messaging, quality and accuracy. * Ensure all content is in brand, consistent in style, quality and tone of voice, and optimized for search and user experience for all channels of content including online, social media, email, mobile, video, and print. * Initiate, research, write, and deliver engaging content for SOM-wide communications, assessing and recommending best platforms for delivery. * Collaborate with Departments, divisions and programs across the institution to identify significant stories, coordinate content development and distribution plans. * Conduct ongoing usability tests to gauge content effectiveness. Gather data and metrics, analyze results and make recommendations. * Establish a workflow for requesting, creating, editing, publishing, and retiring content. * Conduct periodic competitive audits. * Follow issues, trends, and developments in higher education and reflect them in prepared communications. As the Lead Content Strategist / Writer, you will be an important part of a dynamic web team, facing creative and content challenges, with exciting opportunities to expand skill sets and site functionality. Minimum Qualifications * A minimum of a Bachelor's degree required; preferably with a major in Journalism, English, Communications or other related major. Master's degree in a related field preferred. * 6+ years of experience writing copy and editing * 3+ years of content strategy, web marketing, and web content management. * Superior editing and proofreading skills, including experience with Plain Language and SEO. * Good understanding of print as well as all social media and digital formats. * Ability to write in a wide range of styles and voices in AP style * Demonstrated ability to translate complex subject matter for lay audiences; healthcare experience strongly preferred * Experience in use of content management systems (e.g., T4, , other) * Familiarity with SEO content practices and web analytics * A portfolio of website writing samples and/or content strategy deliverables will be required for consideration. * Experience facilitating research activities like: User Interviews, Focus Groups, Surveys with goals of qualitative and quantitative analysis to propose and prioritize change. * Strong documentation skills including the ability to execute and deliver content and direction using tools such as wire-frames, spreadsheet matrices, content docs, and presentations. * Basic understanding of HTML/CSS. * Ability to work in a diverse environment required.
