Small Appliance & Air Conditioning Assistant Mechanic

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

This is skilled work for the installation, maintenance and repair of air conditioning equipment, small appliances and related apparatus. May direct the work of semi-skilled trade workers as required.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Small Appliance and Air Conditioning Assistant Mechanic. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Supervisor.

• Repair, maintain and replace HVAC systems.

• Examples of duties include replacing or adjusting worn or broken parts such as compressors, condensers, fan motors, pumps, contactors, etc.

• Tests equipment or adjusts valves, connections, fittings and coupling.

• Removes and installs motors and pumps; replaces shafts and bearings.

• Repacks and reinstalls.

• Replaces repairs thermostats and humidistats.

• Adjusts or changes belts.

• Replaces gaskets.

• Sets air-flow controls to sit occupants by adjusting splitter, damper, diffusers, and fan speeds.

• Removes cleans and replaces strainers and filters.

• Adjusts expansion equipment.

• Observes operation, reads and check gauges and instruments.

• Determines temperature and humidity factor.

• Does preventive maintenance work.

• Replace broken units.

• Assists supervisor in planning modification and new installation projects in preparation of specifications.

• Repair of household appliances (i.e. ranges, refrigerators, ice machines, etc.)

• Examples include but are not limited to the replacing of range burners, refrigerator gaskets, replacing of compressors and motors.

• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, test instruments and standard tools commonly utilized in the repair and service of various types of air conditioning, heating, and ventilating equipment, units, electrical motors and pumps.

• Considerable knowledge of the mechanical operation of various kinds of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

• Knowledge of the principals and theory of basic refrigeration and mechanics.

• Ability to detect defects in machinery and to make the necessary repairs or adjustments.

• Ability to work from oral or written instructions or from simple diagrams, sketches and blueprints.

• Basic knowledge of electrical circuitry and wiring installation relating to air conditioning equipment.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the City to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.

• Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.

• Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.

• Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.

• Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time.

• Work involves frequent typing, walking and bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time.

• Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.

• Journeyman's license in air conditioning from Miami-Dade County OR five (5) years of paid work experience preferably in a municipal setting in lieu of journeyman's license.

• Valid Florida Driver License.

• License to recuperate and handle freon gas.
