The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is seeking an experienced STANDARD Missile-2 (SM-2) analyst.

Job Summary:
Analyze and evaluate overall SM-2 missile and air defense weapon system performance creating and utilizing detailed digital simulations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate algorithms and models relevant to all deployed SM-2 Medium Range (MR) guided missile variants. Relevant areas include RF and IR seeker operations, RF environmental models, terminal guidance, midcourse guidance, ship engagement support, etc. Evaluate existing designs and identify performance shortfalls. (40%)
  • Overall evaluation of combat system performance utilizing and augmenting detailed simulations. Assess performance of existing systems against several evolving threats. Determine limiting factors to system performance and propose and analyze potential combat system improvements. Assess and propose architectural enhancements that allow more robust implementation across an array of fire control systems that support SM-2 guided missiles. (40%)
  • Participate in the analysis of data created during live fire tests. Analysis of data is geared toward validating design assumptions, assessing the sufficiency of current designs as well as adding to the data base of environmental data. (10%)
  • Support configuration management process of detailed SM-2 6-DOF simulations. Develop variants of SM-2 simulations addressing all relevant missile and combat system configurations. Establish appropriate input files to instantiate a baseline for every desired configuration and develop multiple test cases for each configuration to ensure proper functioning of applicalbe functionality. (5%)
  • Summarize study results in presentations to sponsors and industry and provide written documentation of work. Mentor staff supporting SM-2 technical activities. (5%)

Required Qualifications:

Masters degree or higher in electrical engineering, physics, or mathematics. At least 25 years of experience in guided missile system design, integration, test and performance evaluation. Familiarity with high-level programing languages such as FORTRAN, C, and C in a LINUX environment.

Desired Qualifications:
30 years of experience supporting product life cycle activities associated with the SM-2 MR program. Strong proficiency with the SM-2 MR 6DOF simulation.

Special Working Conditions: This is a part-time position.
