Under the general direction of the Cardiopulmonary Supervisor and Medical Director of Sleep, sleep technologists assist in the clinical assessment, physiological monitoring and testing, diagnosis, management, and prevention of sleep related disorders with the use of various diagnostic and therapeutic tools providing care to patients of all ages. These tools include but are not limited to polysomnograph, positive airway pressure devices, oximetry, capnograph, actigraph, nocturnal oxygen, screening devices, and questionnaires. The practice of Sleep Technology includes performance under the order of, and under the general supervision of a physician licensed by the State Board of Medicine.

Job Requirements Licensure / Certification / Registration: Completion of an educational program in Respiratory Care. 2 year certificate, associate degree, and/or baccalaureate degree after program completion.

Must be registered with the Kentucky Board of Respiratory Care. Must be registered with the: Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) (RPSGT) and/or American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) (RST).

Education: Completion of an educational program in respiratory Care, RRT/CRTT.

Experience: Successful completion of an orientation program.

Special Qualifications:
Good communication skills; computer skills helpful; ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.

CPR: Obtaining and maintaining competence in the performance of basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Demonstrates knowledge of OSHA regulations and follows the laboratories safety policies by utilizing the safety items/equipment provided by the facility. Performs laboratory work in assigned areas in a prompt and accurate manner. Performs quality control as described in the policy/procedure manuals taking necessary corrective action when controls are not within the labs quality standards. Notifies Laboratory Manager when corrected reports are issued. Maintains daily instrument maintenance & troubleshooting and communicates any problems to personnel on other shifts. Monitors inventory of supplies and relays impending shortages to the Laboratory Manager. Performs phlebotomies as needed, and requests any assistance as needed. Instructs and supervises new employees and students as assigned. Trained on proper billing procedures according to hospital/laboratory policies and procedures. Knows how and when to use or request ABN's, and follows policies on standing orders, verbal orders, and incomplete orders. Understands billing compliance as important role for Medicare, Medicaid and other federally funded programs. Knowledge of how to use billing hotline for violations or billing questions/concerns. Demonstrates knowledge of hospital emergency policies. Works 40 hours/wk and assists on weekends as workload indicates. Rotates "on call" as assigned. Assists other areas in completing workload, including areas outside of the laboratory, only when testing and maintenances are finished and primarily to not leave the lab without coverage. Assists in evaluation of new modified methods or procedures, when requested. Is knowledgeable & possesses the ability to understand & react effectively to the unique needs, growth & development of patients in any of the following age groups: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric and patients who have restraints. Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word required. Education: AS degree or certificated in Medical Lab Technician and be ASCP registered or board eligible.
